The French name literally means "Lantern of the Dead". There are many examples in small villages, such as in Sarlat. The structure is a small stone tower with a small opening at the top, where a light was displayed at night to mark the position...More

This building is well worth a look, its unusual, and hidden away, but if you get to the church, you will see it behind the church. Well worth a visit.

Steps into the structure are short but steep. Saw a woman being attended by medics who’d fallen coming out of the structure.who appeared to have broken her ankle. My advice, find a safer place to get a panoramic view.

You'll see it behind the Cathedral. Together with the remaining graveyard in the back yard of the church it makes am impressive view.

In the Valley of the Dordogne in the Aquataine region of southern France is the historic and beautiful town of Sarlat. Located away from its main streets and near a church is the Lanterne Des Morts. When I first saw it I heard it dated...More

A gentle stroll up from the cathedral. Sit quietly and take time out of the usual rush. We were thrilled the 2nd time we visited the lantern as there was a couple of buskers whose wonderful haunting voices were amplified by the building.

It is a interesting building with a quite mysterious origin but only from the outside. Nothing to see in the inside....so a useless free entrance.

Small old stone building, kind of spooky on a dark night, and fair photo shots if your camera is able to capture the mood. It was built in the middle of the medieval time.

Well worth a wander around the Sarlat church. The outside is more interesting than the interior. At the back you come upon the lantern that overlooks the church and grave yard.
