We were here on a Sunday and feared the oyster stands would not be opened, but they were! Go down to the entrance to the pier at the far end, the one closest to the view of Mont St. Michel. You'll find loads of fresh oysters to your left at a fantastic price! And if the tide is low, you'll see the incredible oyster beds. There are many places to dine after you've slurped your plate of oysters as an appetizer! Enjoy!

I am not an oyster eater, but when you are here you wish you were. Fresh from just around the corner you can choose from a number of vendors that sell nothing but oysters.
Wine can be bought "to go" at a near by bar, then you just sit down in the harbour and throw the shells in the ocean when done! Looks fantastic and is an enjoyable sight and activity for anyone, even if you don't eat the oysters.

If you love oysters, this place is the real deal. An outdoor spot where you can buy a plateful of fresh oysters, have them opened for you, and you take them to the seawall and eat them. When you're done with each oyster, you toss the shells onto the beach.

It's briliant. It's the oysters in the rough experience...and its in the oyster capital. If you want a fancy meal then skip it. But its marvelous. I loved it.

This is an excellent place to buy and taste the oysters and it's worth making a little turn even if originally you were not going to stop by :) The oysters are always fresh, the prices are as low as they could be even comparative to the neighbor towns (to say nothing about Paris). The view is picturesque and if the weather is good, you can even see Le Mont Saint-Michel (see photo). The sellers speak English and French and will open the oysters for you, just don't forget to return a plastic plate back!

Little lifehack: if on your way to this place you stop by a boulangerie and buy a fresh baguette + some butter and a bottle of cidre/muscadet for €3-7 in a local store or in a supermarket, you will catch a lot of jealous sights :) So, do some preparation beforehand and enjoy a really good oyster meal for a ridiculous amount of money.

As Austalians, we had watched Manu Fidel, in a TV series, explore his native France and promote the delights of the fresh oysters at Cancale. We added it to our travel list and were not disappointed!

Some tips and suggestions, for others to enjoy the experience.
1. We arrived by car on the D76. On the main corner to turn left into the town there is a bakery. Stop here and buy a baguette.
2. Parking is at a premium down at the Point des Crolles. Instead follow the signs along du Gal de Gaulle to the tourist office. There is a parking bay there for 1 1/2 hours. Call in at the tourist office for a map, there is also free wifi. If you missed the earlier bakery there is another up the hill on the right corner from the tourist office.
3. Walk down rue du Port from the tourist office. About 15 minutes. Just a few doors before you reach the corner on the left is a wine shop. You can buy a half bottle of wine, with plastic cups, for €3. Now you have your supplies, head along to the oyster market. You will see the blue and white tents of the sellers, near the lighthousethe and how the locals sit on the stairs or tables to enjoy the delights.
4. If like us, you missed the baguette and wine buying, you can head up the beach past the oyster sellers where there are toilets and there is a big yellow awning. Here you can buy all sorts of other food if you have non oyster eaters with you, as well as 2 glasses of white wine €5 and half a buttered baguette for €2. They also have tables they are happy for you to eat your oysters at. Note, not all their staff speak English, but they are very helpful.
Enjoy this wonderful experience if you are in the area. Bon appetit!

So simple in so poetic: you just take your oysters in the Marché and you go eating just sitting in front of the sea and of the oystercultures! Beatiful to taste all kind of oysters with a drop of lemon, seeing the high water coming so quickly.
One tip: take with you a bottle of white wine!!!

Based on friends and tripadvisor suggestions, we arrived there prepared in accordance with the suggestions - baguette, champagne, good weather and great expectations.
Conclusions - 6 are great, 12 is too much, a perfectly spent time and afternoon.
Remember, do not be hurry.

We love oysters and wrote down Cancale after seeing an Australian TV show feature a segment on the town.
Avoid the numerous cafes and restaurants and head straight to the little market with blue and white striped stalls to buy a dozen direct from the vendors for a fraction of the price (5 euro) plus a lemon, to eat off a white plastic tray you return afterwards. Sit there on the stone wall in the sunshine and eat the freshest, briniest oysters - you'll never forget it. Part of the fun is tossing the empty shells straight below on the sea wall.
Oh, and if you're in the market for a striped Breton top, avoid the first one of the corner as you come down the hill, and walk along the waterfront to the right and you'll see a shop with a wide range of striped colours (more than just navy, or red) and designs for women and children.

Cancale is famous for their magnificent oysters and the best way to eat them is right from the market - no need for a restaurant - just pick some wonderful #1's from the oyster sellers along the seawall and have them open them on a plastic plate with some lemon and away you go into oyster heaven!! I should have had that 2nd dozen!!! But i did later :-)

You must not miss it even if you do not like oysters.
Several stalls where you can choose them ad eat them beside the seaside (a bottle of wine will improve the experience).
