Beatiful gothic cathedral faithfully rebuilt following an RAF mistake!

With a little sight-seeing time at our disposal we headed for the cathedral nearby. It is large and impressive for the size of the town and right next to the equally impressive ducal palace. Inside you quickly realize from the modern stained glass Windows and other reconstructions that this cathedral was almost totally destroyed during a mistaken bombing of the... More

Nevers' cathedral is unique in that its stained glass windows are modern, having been commissioned in recent times to replace the historical windows that were destroyed when a WWII Allied bomb accidentally hit the cathedral. The old windows were not gothic stained glass but figured grisaille. The modern ones are beautiful and thematic and have explanations near each window of... More

In the heart of old town Nevers is this incredible cathedral dating back to , I believe, around 800, surviving fires, bombing, multiple reconstructions. Well worth a visit.

The cathedral is situated right next to the palace. Due to various restorations the church has a rather eclectic mix of style but it seems to work quite well. There are so many gargoyles on the outside.

This church would be pretty boring if stained windows were not so noticeable: they are very contemporary and fit the church quite well, actually. Beautiful.

what once started as a roman cathedral, became an eclectic composition of roman and gothic, with an almost subdued transition between these. It is worth a visit, after you visited the palace, unless you don't like visiting churches

The cathedral is open to the public, you can freely walk around. Inside, they have several panels with information regarding the history. It is in a good state and worth a visit.

Some of the inside & out was cordoned off for repairs & maintenance, but it was still worth visiting. Typical of its type, many alcoves showed different views & scenes. Entry was free

I don't know who had the good idea of commissioning modern stain glass windows for that lovely church but what a pity! The artists are all very famous but it is horrible. One or two are less terrible than the others... I rated it very good because it is too awful to miss! If you want to see incredible stain... More
