Fascinating structure under restoration. Nice walk along the water to get there or go by the tourist train

Impressive structure but as reported there are visual restrictions. Does take up the skyline and when restored will be a real sight. Worth checking out.

The structure is largely invisible because of major renovation work. You can take a seat in the black box of the Transporter Bridge House in Echillais and relive the experience of crossing the Charente. Or go to Bilbao for the real deal.

Hello Peter, We thank you for the great review you made after your visit of the Pont Transbordeur. We are very pleased that you enjoyed the crossing in the black box. It's true the spanish Transporter Bridge near Bilbao allow you to enjoy a crossing on her gondola! Of course we invite you to come back in Rochefort in 2020 to cross the river Charente on the renovated gondola! Best regards, L'équipe du Pont Transbordeur

Bonjour Steve C, Thank you for your review after your recent visit. Important renovation work is performed on the Pont Transbordeur since 2016. The bridge will become a major attraction of Rochefort again. The opening is planed next year. We inform our visitors on our website about the renovation works. We regret that you couldn't enjoy every offers in Transporter Bridge area : the "Maison du Transbordeur" (Transporter Bridge visitor centre), the Watchmen's path around the Transporter bridge, the visitable renovation works area ... Hopefully see you again in the near future! Best regards. L'équipe du Pont Transbordeur

We came to view this structure but it was being repaired and so was not in service. Hopefully when it is totally restored it will continue to be a major unique attraction.

After visiting and using our first travelling bridge in Bilbao, we have become very interested on this innovative technology from over a 100 years ago.

With only 8 left in the world, it is so important that governments conserve these structures for the world to admire.

This particular bridge is being completely renovated, the horizontal beam that carries the Gondola has been removed entirely at present so it is hard to imagine how it works without the informative signage around the base.

We walked the 2.5km from Rochefort along the bank of the river, past historic buildings and wartime relics and that was a wonderful way to come across this amazing structure, despite it being covered in scaffolding at present.

You can see this impressive piece of industrial engineering from parts of main town - it's that big. I followed the satnav and it took us over the new bridge to the far side - I think there's a visitor centre on the near bank? It's undergoing renovation and so parts are covered in scaffolding which means you can't get right up close. However, there are information panels and details of the planned works to get it back into working order. We picked up a brochure in the main tourist office and it includes a walk round the vicinity. There are pictures showing large ocean going ships gliding underneath with crowds of onlookers on both sides of the river. This is the only bridge of its type left in France, with eight others worldwide out of the original 20 or so built (three are in UK - Middlesbrough/Newport/Warrington). It would be interesting to travel across on the underslung platform when it's back in use.

If in the area worth a look. Even under renovation. Always amazed me building such a structure rather a full bridge. How much more engineering and cost is required.

Dear Listen4life, Thank you for your feedback. We regret that your visit has not been up to yours expectations. As from 2016, the gondola will cease to cross above the river "Charente" due to major renovation work on the bridge coordinated by the state. On Échillais side, the visitor centre is opened every days from april to the 13th of november. Discover the story of the Transporter Bridge with a new recreational digital area and take a place on the gondola to relive the experience of a crossing on board as if you were there ! We hope to welcoming you again. Best regards, The Transporter's Team
