You can really envisage the complete viaduct given the extent of the remains. There is little here to warrant a long detour but if you are in the vicinity it’s an interesting site.

This Aqueduc is a little off the main roads but well worth visiting. Although it is incomplete in many parts, it gives you a good idea of how Roman ingenuity brought water to the people and crops.

These ruins are terrific, a very peaceful stroll next to an olive grove. It is great to explore these, we had the area all to ourselves. When you get to the end, there is a great view of the area.

We enjoyed exploring the ruins. The aqueduct originally ended at the hillside, where it fed a series of water mills (long gone.)

Among the olive groves, there are the remains of the Roman Aqueduct of Barbegal. It did carried the water from the mountain of Alpilles to the city of Arles some 50km away. Well worth seeing.

We walked through the forest from the mills. It is a nice walk. The ruins are interesting. When you follow them to the far end, they run through the rocks, and there is a panoramic view.

The site itself is beautiful with a lovely adjacent olive grove. However, while we stopped to take a few pictures both our car and another had a window smashed and all of our small bags and belongings were stolen. Do NOT leave anything in your...More

Berbegal is one of the most remarkable sites in pre - industrial Europe. Originally an Aqueduct providing Arles with drinking water it was superceded and became an water based industrial complex where 10 water mills generated power. There is a good scale model in the...More
