The cost saving techniques are very apparent. First thing I found is that all phones have been removed. So if your cell phone doesn't work in Canada, good luck. Once you get in your room, you can use free wi-fi for your phone, but if the front desk gives you the wrong room key, you are stuck out in the hall. I found a friendly Canadian man who let me use his phone to call registration and they sent somebody with the correct key.
The best cafe on the hill, Ridge Rocket Cafe, is now closed, so there is only one on- hill cafe, Back Forest, which has drastically cut back their menu choices. Their soda dispenser was out of order all week. Their restroom hand driers were broken and there were no paper towels.
The Gun Barrel restaurant, (my favorite) is gone so there is one less place for dinner.
They no longer have tissue dispensers at the chair lifts.
I have been going to BW for 25 years for ski vacations. No more!

One of our favourite places to ski as a family - we keep coming back and this year did once again not disappoint. Amazing snow, short lift lines, great ski-in, ski-out accommodations, lots of things to do and yummy places to eat in the village. Ski school and all mountain staff are excellent too. When your body needs a rest from skiing, there are lots of other fun activities to keep you busy. We especially like the tubing and the dog-sledding. Most of the dogs are rescues and you get to meet them all and hear their stories before getting on the sleds - and boy do they love their runs! Highly recommend the whole Big White experience!

Resort staff are generally in a different world and view guests as an inconvenience to their own winter adventure. This was clear in a number of restaurants and when lift operators were texting on phones whilst skiers boarded the lifts.
But never more clear than when a lift closed and the operator decided to advise us to cut through glades to get back to a run and then the car park. This resulted in 2 hours spent trekking through deep snow and dangerously close to steep drops before we got to safety. We were just glad it remained daylight etc. we are both qualified ski instructors and even we felt in danger. It’s not true to say you can go anywhere and ski any part of this mountain and it’s not safe to listen to lift operators here. We advised resort management who thanked us but didn’t even apologise..poor!

I was hoping to ski Big White but a traffic accident on the highway delayed arrival till 12pm....at that time in the ticketing area I learned, there was no half day pass and with poor weather conditions it was going to cost my wife and I over 300$ to ski for a few hours..not a good option for us, I might have risked it if there was a have day rate but the offer of full day was too much poor value.

Big white os just awesome, until you want to get lunch or a dring at the Clock Tower cafe or Black forest lodge.
THE SERVICE IS TERRIBLE. Must be losing revenue as the staff have one speed only and that appears to be only very slow, or maybe hangover slow. In distinct need of a kick up the backside, how can Big White allow such lazy, uncaring staff to tarnish an otherwise great resort's reputation.

My husband and I took the dinner sleigh ride at the Big White Ski Resort and it was
a fun and beautiful experience. As it turned out, we were the only people who booked the ride that evening and the driver and assistant were happy to depart and hour
early as we had to drive back to Kelowna after our ride.
There were blankets for our comfort, the horses were well mannered and the scenery
was like a Hallmark postcard-just beautiful. The cabin was warm and toasty and t food was good.
Jim and Sam, the driver and helper, were very thoughtful and made the experience memorable.

The first day I was here I signed up for the Snow host tour of the mountain. Paul was a wonderful guide and showed me all the clips and the runs that would best suit my skill level. It’s a big mountain and the snow host tour helped to get me oriented.

Stayed right near the village, and received good service in regard to equipment hire and lift tickets. Snow conditions were excellent during our stay. The only disappointment was too few dining options, particularly at night. We had dined at The Woods on previous stays, but it was closed during our week there, and we had a bad experience at the Black Diamond Grill and The Globe menu was limited. We ended up eating lunch or dinner at the Bullwheel on at least 4 occasions and enjoyed all our meals there.

Beautiful ski resort. It was great skiing here. The mountain is amazing and I'll definitely be coming back. Theres a decent amount of restaurants and bars here. Parking is free with a gondola ride to the village.

Trying to decide whether to visit Big White in December or March. Is one month better than the other with regard to snow levels, crowd levels?
Big White Central Reservations
Kelowna, Canada4 contributions
Thank you for your question. This is an average from
2007-2012 on the temperature and snowfall throughout the season.
Avg Min Temp Avg Max TempTotal Snowfall
Dec -10.5C (13.1F) -6.5C (20.3F) 132.0cm (52.0")
January -9.0C (15.8F) -5.0C (23.0F) 117.5cm (46.2")
February -8.5C (16.7F) -3.0C (26.6F) 109.0cm (42.9")
March -8.5C (16.7F) -1.5C (29.9F) 133.5cm (52.9")
April -4.0C (24.8F) -2.0C (28.4F) 40.0cm (15.7")
As you can see December and March can be very similar in their snowfall, but the temperature in March usually are a little higher so it all depends on what you are looking for.

Has anyone done the horse drawn sleigh and dinner ride? If so, how long was the actual ride? And what was the dinner like? Have read a previous review of the brunch and they said it was a waste of money and the brunch was terrible.

Have done it a few times the sleigh rode is about 45 minutes long. The dinner wasn’t great. I felt sorry for the horses. Save your money

We booked a 7-day ski trip in December and wondering whether we should get a rental car or the village is pretty small and we can just walk around to get to everywhere? Thanks!

Kelowna, Canada1 contribution
Hi Stella S,
We cant wait to see you in December!
There is no need to hire a car to get around our village. The village is laid out so that everything is conveniently accessible by walking. We also have a free on mountain shuttle that runs a full circle loop every 30 minutes. Lara's Gondola is also free for pubic use and assists with guests wanting to move between the village and Happy Valley.
Let it snow!
Kind regards,

We are a family of 4 travelling from Australia staying at Big White from 22 December 2017 for 7 nights with limited Skiing experience, want to pack in as much as we can are we better trying to book things like lessons now or wait until we arrive? Also want to be able to book a Christmas Lunch somewhere on the mountain. Any suggestions appreciated. Jim and Mary.

What is the easiest Green run for those ready to graduate from the runs off of Plaza Chair. We tried Highway 33 and it was just a bit too hard (steep). Thanks!
