Stunning

My spouse and I actually visited around 2008. I had dreams about this place for weeks after the visit. What impressed us as much as the facility and museum itself were the groups of school children. There is a strong sense that the schools send these students to bring home the horrific history. The children were very well behaved and as deeply moved as were we. We commented several times to each other that American students should have similar learning experiences.

Worth going out of the way for

Didn't expect the museum to be so well set-up, because the website looks rather bad. The audio tour is very thorough and it takes a good 2.5 hours to see the whole site, but it's definitely worth it. We learnt about everything there is to know about the (mostly) political prisoners (including some women) who were locked up here. The torture room sent chills down our spines. You can easily get there by public transport, it's about a 20 minute walk from the Willebroek train station. Would recommend going here if you want to discover more about the oft-forgotten black pages of Belgian history.

Very well preserved. Guided audiotour a good extra. A lot of information available on and around the site.

Nazi prison camp during the German occupation during the World War II

Very interesting visit (2-3 hours) to a nazi camp close to Brussels.

Lot of pictures, videos and audio explanations to learn a bit more about the German occupation.

Take at least 2 hours to visit here, to take it all in what these poor people went through, many are not aware of its existence. Go on a nice day as part of it is outside.

Very interesting

Visited with a friend. This fort has a sad and rather ironic history- being built to protect against German invaders, only to be used by the Gestapo without siege. Give yourself a few hours here, so you don't feel rushed and can absorb all the information.
You can tour around much of the inside and the tour continues outside.

Very interesting history, must see.

I live nearby so I visited some times already. This is a must for tourists, a piece of history from WW2. Something we musn't forget, all the horrors that happened there... Very haunting. The price is very reasonable and you can choose to get an audio guide or not. I highly recommend you do. It gives you so much more history when you use the audio guide. I think the displays are in Dutch and French, but not in English. Since you CAN choose an English audio guide, this is the best option.

WWII horrors

Visiting a concentration camp is something we want to do, but touring Fort Breendonk was an educational alternative. The price is reasonable. The first few rooms in the fort deal with its history when it was used by the Belgium military during WWI and before Germany turned it into a house of horrors. The displays are in French and Flemmish. I wish they would also be in English and German. I think this would reach more visitors. I was thankful for the English audio guide. A few displays and areas are in need of repairs, but overall the site is cared for well. I was glad to see that new displays are being developed and created.

There is not much of the facility that we didn't get to see. The self-guided tour is well-designed and takes you through most of the areas in the fort. There are numerous stories and displays about individuals who were imprisoned here. This personalizes the fort and allows visitors to know what actually happened here.

History and horror
Jun. 2019 • Friends
This historic fort is a good example of military engineering and is in a fine state of preservation. However, it was never used for its original purpose. Its current reason for existence is its use during WW2 as a holding and interrogation centre by the German forces. The stage is well set to bring the appalling memories to life. English visitors should be aware that an audio guide or a guided tour is essential as the explanations are not translated into English.

Visit this camp already several times with our family and extended family. It is hard on kids under twelve, but a great lesson for teenagers.
