Furniture is scarce, but light and airy
May 2011
A rather empty chapel, but very light and airy, furniture is scarce, opended daytime. It had been the chapel of a larger farm belonging to Cistercian Monastery Eberbach in Rheingau (Oberwesel) which had to maintain the Eberbacher vineyards and fields. The monastery farm was mentioned in a 1218 charter, origin of the chapel 2nd half of 14th century. The Chapel is built in rubble masonry (Quarry stone), plastered white, architectural elements and walls made of red sandstone. Within divides a choir arch the chapel in a meeting room and a Choir. The apse has a groin vault (originally the chapel must have had a flat ceiling or an open truss), the present wooden barrel vault was probably built in after the great fire in the War of the Grand Alliance (Nine Years' War, War of the Palatine Succession) when the French laid the city in ashes.
