Nice half-a-day activity, the steam train takes you back in time, it is a great adventure for everybody, from couples to families. The landscapes are really nice, although we travelled at the beginning of the spring and many trees were still naked. You can buy your ticket to Brocken, but stop at the stations in between, and then re-start your... More

Took a short steam train ride from Wernigerode to Drei Anne Hohle (45 minutes one-way). It is really nice that there are still so many regular steam trains running here. At the railway station of Drei Anne Hohle, there were 4 steamtrains in total (total kilometer of tracks in the Harz region by steamtrain is 140km). Ticket from Wernigerode to... More

The steam railway system was the focus of our 5 day road trip in Germany. Having studied the railway map, we dropped off one of our party in Nordhausen for the diesel/steam trip to Wernigerode, where we were staying, and then the next day we all rode the steam train to the Brocken peak. Views weren't great on that particular... More

Harz steam railway is a narrow gauge masterpiece! It is worth visiting East Germany just to travel on it. Steam enthusiast have fantastic access to some awesome locos, and tourists can use the railway to visit some beautiful part of the country with magnificent scenery. A must especially if you can visit when there is heavy snow - mist picturesque.

This was my second visit to the HSB, both times arriving on a charter train from further afield that included a steam train ride to the top of the Brocken. Last time I came was in the summer in t-shirt and shorts weather but this time was very different - freezing cold with thick snow all around, but if anything,... More

This is a proper railway, not a fabricated heritage line. I took a 5 day ticket and boy o boy did I get my money's worth. Maybe you don't have that much time, then at a minimum take the train to Broken, Real, old, (some ancient) steam engines working hard. Diesel railcars less quaint but great forward views. Lots of... Got a 3 day Harz Tour Ticket for 18 Euros (thanks Paul from Australia for tip!). Buy this from the bus station office at Wernigerode - not the train station. This allows you to go all over the network (except the Brocken Line). I am not a steam train fanatic, so just travelled on a few short routes. It will... More

The Harz mountains are absolutely ideallic - Steam trains on mainline services everywhere, just like it was in England in the 1950's. If you are going to be in the area for a few days, say centered at Quedlinburg or Wernigerode, think about buying a 3 day ticket and hop on and off the trains to your delight. Everyone is... More

A great way to explore the wonderful towns and scenery of this great part of Germany as well as being a 'must' for rail fans. It's worth using mainline trains and buses to short-cut some journeys such as Wernigerode to Quedlinburg which will otherwise take up a good couple of hours Staff are very helpful.
