About
Be aware that the last entrance to visit the museum is 45 minutes before the closing time - HR GIGER IS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS SWISS ARTISTS. He was awarded an « Oscar » in 1980 in Hollywood for the movie « Alien ». He was the designer of the Alien beast and different other biomechanical creatures. The artist was born in Coire in 1940. Giger has given to Gruyeres a different dimension, a wonderful attraction: two worlds completely opposed. One traditional and the other one fantastic. The visitor penetrates in the biomechanical, surrealistic and mind-blowing place. The museum is open since 1998. Most of its twenty rooms are reserved for Giger’s work: paintings, sculptures and furnitures. His private collection is shown on the third floor artist such as Coleman, Dado, E. Fuchs, Schwarz, Steve Leuba, etc. A bar completely designed by Giger built on the left hand side of the Museum is the last living master piece of the artist where the atmosphere and the sensation are incomparable.

The museum is a series of paintings and artworks with zero explanations / narrative of sorts. There were just a few lines per painting saying the title, artist and year. There was no audio / written guide whatsoever. I really like museums and I was very disappointed by this one.

If you know H R Giger from Alien movies you'll love this museum. Within the historic building in Gruyere, the museum has sketches from the movie layout, models, pictures & sculptures. You have to take time to look at each individual piece, as the details just keep coming.
There is a section for adults only, but some of the other exhibits have a 'risque' feel to them.
Thoroughly enjoyed this museum

Visited this museum in November 2022. I think most people are aware of HRG's work for the Alien film trilogy, which features his bio-mechanical highly stylized work, although the museum features not only HR Giger's own work, but his own private collection.
Not for the faint hearted, there is an adults only section, and this continues his themes of carnal desire, surreal dreamscape, nightmarish horror.
It's a real treat to have visited, highly recommend - and go with an open mind.

A very exciting and thought-provoking exhibition of surreal, nightmarish art worth seeing.
A bit of a strange location in the middle of a medieval setting a setting from outer space.
What bizarre mind was able to create all this and that so long ago.
The museum is quite small, but well worth a visit.

A museum visit that will leave you wondering what sort of mind created such work! Go with an open mind and enjoy the weird world of H.R Giger! The art work is dark, and pornographic, but also thought provoking. We went with our children (21, 17 and 14) who were old enough not to be silly about what they were seeing but we were all still a little shocked! I wouldn't take kids any younger.
Definitely worth visit as is the H.R Giger bar which is fantastic inside and serve great cocktails. Staff in both museum and bar were fab.

If you're a fan of creepy, sexualized alien themed art, this place is for you.
The inspiration for the creatures in the Alien movie franchise and other art make this stop worth the trip. The mind of H R Giger must be a very interesting and scary place ( a good thing ) That it's located in a scenic and picturesque castle / village makes it even more of a treat

Being a professional airbrush artist myself, this was a place I'd wanted to visit for years! Loved it ! could have spent hours there. Not a big place at all, very intimate , laid back and easy to get round. Quite a few steep stairs. If you know Giger's work you will know what to expect. Don't go and be offended ! Spent a while in the bar next door, which is also quite small. Just to warn you, we went when it was VERY busy (public holiday) We had to park maybe an hours walk away , and the walk up a steep hill to the village in hot weather would've been a nightmare! We were lucky enough to get a lift up there with a security guy ! Had a long walk back though !

Visited the bar and museum and they were as incredible as I had hoped they would be. I came from Canada and had no issues with my vaccination proof. I showed the provincial documents of my vaccinations on the app, fyi. Really beautiful place to explore after the Giger museum and bar: mountains, sheep, cobblestones, cheese, and the castles. I got there early and it was worth it as the bar was really crowded by 11am-ish.

I did a special trip for my La Carmina blog readers from London to Gruyeres, just to see the HR Giger bar as I'm a long time fan of his surrealist, bio-mechanical alien works. The museum is housed in a 17th century Chateau de Germain, and it's the perfect setting for his dark, dystopian works. As Alien director Ridley Scott said: “At its essence, Giger’s art digs down into our psyches and touches our very deepest primal instincts and fears. His art stands in a category of its own.” The Giger museum had his rare early works, as well as an adult only erotic section, and originals of his Satanic and occult art. A marvel to see in person, and well worth the trup!

Lots of pornographic material. Quite disturbing. Not suitable for kids at all.
Even if kids have seen the alien movies, the porn in here is over the top.
Go to the cafe to get a sense of the design/ alien theme.
