Modest looking café and gardens but the food is excellent with a well balanced menu. The beef burgher was memorable tender minced beef with no fatty bits enclosed in a fresh bun with melted cheese and crispy bacon. Served with fresh chips and a salad - all fantastic. Good choice of wine by the glass and great coffee. Must just mention the ice cream sundae huge with lots of chocolate topping. Staff are friendly and helpful. Next time we will go for a row before we eat!!

I booked a river cruise and a cream tea to celebrate my wife's birthday. When we arrived this afternoon, the woman who greeted us said "we were trying to get hold of you all day yesterday. Sorry, but we have had to cancel your cruise because the water levels are too high." We had seen the river, and the water level looked normal. I checked my phone and I had not received any calls from Bodiam Boat Station. I was really quite angry, but just took my refund, and we left, disappointed.
Twenty minutes later I had a call from a different individual. She asked if anyone had contacted us to let us know that our cruise had been cancelled. I explained what had happened earlier, then asked her why the cruise wasn't running. She replied that... "It was the first cruise of the season, and they couldn't get the boat started this morning..."
When I got home I checked my email, and I hadn't received an email from the company.
The river from Newenden to Rother is very lovely from the banks, and I imagine moreso from the water. We were very disappointed to miss this experience. We were treated very shabbily by the Bodiam Boating Station. Though they expressed regret, they made no effort to compensate for our wasted journey and cancelled excursion.
If you wish to book this trip, I suggest you phone to confirm that it's running before you leave home.

Hi Ricardo, I'm sorry you felt this was handled badly. We had indeed tried calling numerous times the day before to let you know that we'd been forced to cancel all river cruises. When I greeted you and explained that you said that you had received several calls but you didn't answer as you hadn't recognised the number and thought it might be a nuisance call!! I don't think there have been many dry areas in the Uk this spring and we have to make sure passengers are safe. The river is locked at Rye and so the level fluctuates during heavy rain. When the level is raised and above the jetty we are unable to operate which is frustrating for everyone.

Just back from a two night stay. Lovely little site, such friendly and helpful staff. Only had breakfast in the cafe once and it was delicious. I’m a coffee snob and they excelled there too. Amenities very clean, and it was great to get out on the pretty river on a rowing boat. Will definitely come back.

Overall very good for boat trip and afternoon tea. Shame they no longer do a scheduled boat service to Bodiam and back.

An excellent afternoon with friends including two young children. Had originally booked for 12 on Sunset cruise in July but weather let us down. Staff were very accommodating rescheduling and reorganising our trip to suit our needs using our deposit paid successfully. All staff were lovely, food was good and river trip was very enjoyable in beautiful weather. The camp site near by looked great, all very relaxed but very efficiently run establishment.

Absolutely amazing place! The staff are all so lovely and really helpful! The river is so pretty and peaceful, and the cafe is a perfect place to grab a bite to eat after.

I booked 2 tandem kayaks for a friend and our 2 daughters aged 9. We arrived 15 minutes early, the lady doing the booking in had dreadful customer service.
She was stressy, offhand and just seemed concerned that we,d bring the kayak back in an hour.. the life jackets were all just hanging up outside, no 9e there to help make sure you had the right ones, considering we had2 young children with us..
Onto the kayak.. we were plonked on, no instructions on how to use the oars or anything,
The river tself is lovely ,but the whole place itself seems over busy, chaotic, and we were going to stay for lunch but decided not to due to the atmosphere..
I won't be returning..

We only came to launch our Canoe but were impressed by the organisation and easy manner of the staff. Dog friendly and I don't mean a couple of bowls of last week's water. Our lovely hounds got a fresh clean bowl before we got our coffees. It was a quiet time and we were not charged for launching although I understand there is normally a £5 charge. The campsite looks family friendly with great views. We will come again.
