On an eagle's nest in the heart of the Massif du Canigou, the former Benedictine Abbey of St. Martin's discretely overhangs the valley since the XI century. A unique site just waiting to be discovered by the delighted rambler, with ist bell tower, marble capitals, the vaulted abbey-church and crypt... A jewel of early Romanesque architecture typical of this region.

We found this walk in the Sentiers D'Emilie Roussillon book and had tried to do it 18 months before, but the paths were closed due to mud slides. We were lucky to have a beautifully sunny day for our walk with not much wind and no clouds. We did not start the walk at the indicated place and so we... More

Hello, thank you for your advice. I am astonished that you did not see on our website that the abbey is closed on Good Friday. As it is not possible on Tripadvisor to give you the URL of the page, I copied below the general informations about the tours. Best regards Sr Maria Petra Conditions and visiting hours Important •... Beautiful Abbey set high up. Expect a 50 min walk to get to the top, not for the faint hearted or those with walking problems. We were too late to get into the Abbey but just walking round the outside was worth the long hike.

At the end of a winding and seemingly endless road from Casteil lies the Abbaye St Martin. It seems incredible that anyone got the idea to build an abbey here, but the location is stunningly beautiful, and the early medieval architecture is as beautiful as everywhere in the Eastern Pyrenees. For the best view, follow the footpath past the ticket... More

We walked up in 30 minutes(from start of the path)from Casteil car park. We parked near the Mairie/ Tourist Office but there is also parking higher up nearer the start of the path. There is also a cafe right next to the start of the path. The path is concrete all the way up and just wide enough for the... More

Hello, thank you for your nice and very informative review. In autumn and sprigtime the shop is open only at the visiting hours, but in summer it is open all day. Please speak also about the abbey to your friends. Best regards Sr Maria Petra More

We parked at the base of the cliff and began our hike. I had read that there were 4X4's available if you make reservations certain days of the week. I found the hike fairly enjoyable, and not too strenuous, but since my husband was on beta-blockers it was a bit arduous for him. We took our time and were certainly... More

You can walk up along the private paved road, mostly in the shadow, or you can call for a 4x4 taxi. At the entrance, a nice nun sells you the tickets for the guided tour. The Abbey is impressive, so isolated in the wood. There are still some nuns, and our guide was a young volonteer very motivated and enthusiastic... More

The walk up to the Abbeys is stunning and impressive. It takes 30-40 minutes without stops and it's worth it a lot ! The views during the walk are stunning and lovely. I asked myself how a 4x4 can climb up to the Abbey in the summer.. Arriving in the abbey take an extra walk above the abbey with a... More

We've put off visiting the abbey many times because we didn't fancy the long steep climb. In March the weather isn't too hot, so it took less than 30 minutes to get to the top. The abbey tour is a bit long and it's in French, but the guide was charming and spoke slowly so I could follow most of... More

The walk up to the Abbey is about 250m and rakes 30 mins without stops. It is worth it. The views are stunning and the Abbey is very pretty. In the summer you can get a 4x4 up to the Abbey - I would imagine that this would detract from the beauty of the place. On the walk up we... More
