train riding on the main road of town

Well, we'd never expected something like that in a small town like Kawakawa. While we were having fish'n chips on the main road, this vintage train came steaming through town.

This didn't seem to be operational when we arrived but the train tracks run down the middle of the main street. We went to the station but there didn't seem to be anyone there. Lovely to see the old steam engine though.

Lovely ride today on Gabriel through the town. Ann the guard was very informative and knowledgeable about both the town and the trains history. Visited the longest wooden bridge in the Southern hemisphere before returning to Kawakawa. Look out for the lava tree!

We rode this railway during a visit from our home in Western Canada. On the day in question, the steam loco was still being reassembled after an inspection, so we had a diesel. We were the only passengers, but they went anyway! Apparently no-one gets disappointed - if they have one paying customer, they go! We had a great ride... More

We spent a few hours riding and photographing the steam engine Gabriel. The line is about 3km but hopes to be longer soon when the river bridge has been restored (and it's getting close). The staff clearly love the railway and are proud to tell you of its' history. The cafe serves good snacks including an excellent seafood chowder. Don't... More

I was returning to Auckland by car when I saw the steam from the platform. A beautiful steam locomotive standing at the platform. I managed to get a few photographs before it headed off over the level crossing, down the centre of the high street before crossing the road and disappearing into the countryside. A steam train journey is always... More

Restoration heaven here Dennis took us around the sheds and showed all the work going on. Train not out today but informative and mind boggling to see how restoration goes

The train, two passenger coaches headed by a diesel engine "Timmy", left Kawakawa station, proceeded down the high street, and rumbled through the countryside for about 2 miles, crossed a main road, and stopped to a halt. The track appears well-maintained and the journey was comfortable. The engine used a loop to get to the other end of the carriages,... More

A nice ride but the guide spoke so much history that we didnt really get a chance to look out! But i did like to hear about how much the trust has gone through to get it all up and running.

We hoped to do this trip on our last trip to the Bay of Islands but couldn’t fit it into our plans, so this was priority #1 for this trip! I did though get the times wrong so we arrived way too early for the first run of the day but meant we got to try out the station café... More
