On Easter Monday 1847, the gates were opened to the very first publicly funded park in the world. Designed by Sir Joseph Paxton - Birkenhead Park was created to be the People's Garden - a place where the lowliest peasant to the British Monarch could stand together to enjoy a piece of the countryside in the middle of the city. In 1850, Fredrick Law Olmstead visited the park and with its inspiration, then went on to design and create what is arguably the most famous public park in the world - Central Park New York. In 2004 Birkenhead Park underwent an £11.8million restoration return it to its former glory. Today, Birkenhead Park is a Grade I listed landscape and carries the prestigious Green Heritage Award. It caters for all visitors with a number of sports such as Football, Cricket, Bowls, Angling and cycling, as well a visitors centre and access to some of the original structures around the park.

I went on a tour with a friend who knows a lot about the history of the area and was stunned at the park. I knew that the park was the inspiration for Central Park in NYC and Joseph Paxton was the head gardener (visitors to Chatsworth will know his work). I was surprised at the size and scope of... Visit the park for a walk and a coffee in the new visitor centre cafe weekly. Over the last 10 years the park has been mostly restored to its former glory and is now a pleasant walk amongst the many birds and squirrels that are regularly fed by the locals. The park is split in two by a busy road... More

Lovely experience. This park is very large and has areas for sports, play and simply walking. It is easy to find a quiet area and just enjoy 'mother nature'. There is a wide variety of trees and a lake with a recently refurbished stone bridge. Take some time out and enjoy the experience.

A good walk any time of the day. No restrooms that are readily accessible or food vendors. I walk my dogs here all the time. In the afternoon, the lower park gets alot of traffic from dog owners with aggressive dogs off the leash so keep an eye on your dog if it cannot defend itself. Stay in the upper... More

Lovely park, nice walk around the main lake and you can buy food from the centre for the ducks (better to buy the food as they are trying to control the pests so discourage bread). Great play area for kids too. The smaller park area is good for ball games and picnics as it quieter and the lake there is... More
