Description:

This is a scheduled ancient monument site containing industrial mill ruins...

This is a scheduled ancient monument site containing industrial mill ruins in a state of picturesque decay. it is a wildlife conservation area and therefore there are no picnic areas, no paddling or swimming areas and no children's play areas. The route down through the Valley past the ruins is steep, muddy and uneven, with steps and some sharp drops to the sides. We strongly advise that you begin your walk at the top of the Valley, opposite Highfields Upper School (where there is parking). There are no toilet or refreshment facilities anywhere in the Valley. It is a peaceful place of natural woodland and wetland habitats, looked after by volunteers for the Arkwright Society, the Charity that owns the Valley. Please help us to take care of this very special place by respecting the wildlife, keeping to the paths, not climbing on the ruins - and taking your litter home with you.

An absolutely beautiful place to visit. We have been many times over the years with being local. We had our wedding photos taken here too. It is a stunning place for a walk.

The presentation of this historic valley is continually being improved and is very nearly there. Having the luxury of 2 cars we used one to drive up the valley and park outside the school at the top to walk down. The frequent bulletin boards gave clear explanations of what we were seeing historically and the cascading water was a joy... More

Fantastic place that isn't really signposted. 10 - 15 minute walk and you come to Lumsden Falls. This is a great place for kids, mine are 6 & 9, to scramble over the rocks and get the odd foot wet! Even better is that parking on the road is free, as is are the falls.

This used to be a hidden gem- remote, quiet and little known but it is getting ruined now. All the grass worn away so it just a mudbath in the wet, dangerously slippery for the unwary. Unsupervised kids mucking about on the ruins. Litter everywhere. Aggro with the locals because of cars parking where they shouldn't. Visitors seem to expect... More

This is a beautiful little valley with waterfalls and lovely walks; it is also an important industrial heritage site. Unfortunately the valley is becoming, to some extent, a victim of its own growing popularity. The valley is managed and maintained in a state of "picturesque decay", which means it's a photographer's delight and the remaining ruins of the mill buildings... More

We found this but it was not easy. although worth the effort it could be sign posted better. Once you find them the falls are worth it and the old mills and pond all worth a visit

Took the children here, they loved the different levels of the waterfall and the dogs loved plaing in it. Godd safe steps to get both old and young up. Park up near the school as not much parking at the bottom near the falls and take a flask!!!

Stayed at Lumsdale house opposite falls so I was able to do the walk 5 times over the weekend. The history of the buildings was fascinating. Lovely falls. All 10 in our party (from 8 to 85) all coped with the steps and loved it (twice). The top pools are very pretty and so peaceful. Kids loved the rope swing.... More

Although we got lost, the walk through Lumsdale was absolutely stunning. You'll need your best hiking boots if you really wish to explore this area as we found ourselves in fields, forest, mud and everything in between. The waterfalls are beautiful and the old ruins create the most spectacular scenery. Only regret is that we didn't bring the big camera.
