The walk isn't too long (maybe 20 min) from the gate along sky road, but it can be muddy and shaky. Many loose rocks kept our feet wobbling and almost tripped several times, but we were wearing very casual shoes. Also, it can get extremely muddy near the castle. However, once you are there, it's a pretty cool site. Unfortunately,... More

The castle can only be accessed by foot and is a 15 minute walk down a rocky path (see picture) so you will need good shoes. You can park your car off the sky road near to the archway entrance (see picture) I would not advise trying to drive down to the castle, despite what google route planner may say.... More

Walk is very easy along a mostly flat path (nothing like attempting to climb Croagh Patrick) and the castle is fun to look around. Gorgeous sea views as well. We were there in October and the weather was gorgeou, only one other group of tourists were there and after they left we were alone to take pics and explore a... More

The castle itself isn't much to look at once you've made the trek there. It's empty, derelict and even a bit dangerous. A more impressive sight from afar. The path to the castle from the road takes maybe 20 minutes or more and can fill in appreciably with water just before approaching the castle, depending on weather conditions. I'm sure... More

Because there is no signage and the road looks more like private property, we were not sure what to expect. Once the castle came into view we knew we were in for a treat. Most of the time, we were the only visitors there and the castle and the views were spectacular. Suggest making sure your footwear is appropriate. I... More

I read about this castle on TA and just had to find it. We drove out the Sky Road from Clifden and almost missed it because I don't think there are any signs. But when you see what looks like a castle entrance on the left side of the road, that's it! We parked along the street and started walking,... More

Even though it was drizzling, the short hike to the castle was well worth it. You can see the water and farmlands along the way. The path is a bit rocky but it wasn't too bad. The castle ruins were beautiful and it's a good place to take photos. This spot didn't pop up in any of the searches we... More

The pathway to the castle is not so good for anyone not too good on their feet, there are now a lot of stones all along the pathway, which is great as it is no longer muddy underfoot (until almost at the end) so it isn't so easy to walk over, and the last part can be very muddy, so... More

We were on the Sky Loop road & took a lovely short walk to the castle. There were delicious blackberries on the walk & beautiful songbirds to enjoy their calls. The castle has some remaining decorative facades. Well worth the walk

We really enjoyed our trip to Clifden Castle. The scenery walking down to it was great, also the cows were almost within touching distance, definitely make you feel like you're in Ireland. We spent about an hour here checking out the different rooms and taking pictures, all the while being serenaded by the constant buzz of working bees collecting their... More
