Nice hike

A lovely hike up the hill brings you to this abandoned castle. Don't go out of your way, but a nice quick excursion.

It requires a short hike, but a lovely one, the path is rocky, but very doable. It's so enjoyable to explore the ruins and soak in the atmosphere of a past era.

basically park at the top of a farm track, slog down the hill about a mile, to an old ruin, with no info or anything there. not really much to see - maybe if you dont have many castles / ruins where you come from then go and see it, but its a bit of a let down.

There is a sign now showing the way to the castle, so its pretty easy to find. The road to it is very uneven & definitely need good shoes. Beautiful scenery w/ lots of sheep, horses and cows. Unbelievable view from the castle looking out! My 16yr old son loved it the best! Enjoyed climbing and exploring all the walls,... More

Very beautiful place , nice and peaceful and the kids loved seeing the horses and sheep . Think they could do a bit more with it . Would be good if they had a guide or some sort of information about the castle . There is sheds out the back wish could easily be made into a little gift shop... More

Beautiful building but very disappointed that there was no information about its history or anything at all about it.

A short walk on a rough track from the road, this is the house built by the founder of Clifden, John D'Arcy in 1818. It's ruined now and it's quite sad to see how the grandiose plans of D'Arcy fell into ruin in such a short time. Not really safe to wander around, the castle is a nice walk and... More

This ruin is off the beaten track. You need to park and walk (approx 15 minutes, medium grade, rocky ground). It is a wonderful ruin, plus there is the stable and general living quarters (?) a short distance away which is also well worth a look. Totally free and a genuine chance to view some old Irish history.
