About
The Sacra di San Michele is an ancient abbey built between 983 and 987 on the top of mount Pirchiriano, 40 km from Turin. The monument is the symbol of Piedmont Region and the place that inspired the writer Umberto Eco to conceive the best-seller “Il nome della rosa” ( The name of the rose ). From it’s towers you can admire Turin and a breathtaking view of the Val di Susa. Inside the main Church of the Sacra, dating from the twelfth century, are buried members of House Savoy, one of the oldest royal family in the world. Dedicated to the cult of the Archangel Michael, defender of the Christian people, the Sacra di San Michele fits inside a ruote of pilgrimage, long over 2000 km, which runs from Saint-Michel in France to Monte Sant’Angelo in Puglia. The history, the spiritual value and the landscape that sorrounds it, trasform the Sacra in a special destination for visitors from all over the world.

- db7477Carlsbad, California3,458 contributionsBeautiful view of the valleyThe ascending 30 minute drive to the Sacre di San Michele isn’t too difficult. The road is good but filled with bikers. There’s a small parking lot at the end that has meters to pay. To ascend to the chapel requires climbing lots of vertical stairs but the views are worth the cost of admission.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 3, 2024

This medieval abbey is situated on a cliff and it rises up like an illustration from a book of fairy tales. For just eight euros you can enter the abbey with a choice of a guided tour or you can go on your own. We decided it was more fun to explore the entire complex including spectacular monastery ruins and breathtaking view of the valley below, by ourselves. It's not far from Turin and there's a beautiful mysterious lake that's worth a visit when you reach the bottom of the road. - Kevin SSouthampton, United Kingdom484 contributionsWorthwhile visitIt’s difficult to think of the words to describe this fabulous place also known as St, Michael’s abbey. If your driving this is quite an extortion add to the adventures. Once at the car / bus park it’s a short walk to the abbey. It’s worth buying an admission ticket in advance. Built in the 10th century it’s something to behold. After years of decline this is now a really good tourist attraction. The history of it is very special and it’s worth the visit if you are on the Turin area.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 24, 2024

Remarkable building and location perched as it is on the edge of a mountain top. Interestingly it seems that this San Michele is one of 7 that spread from Ireland, Cornwall, Normandy, Puglia, Greece and Jerusalem. Strangely they are in a straight line on the map. Might have to seek out the other 4 we've not visited now. The building is not easy to access in it's entirety with a disability. There are some steep stairs but the views across the valley are worth the climb. The coffee bar again with stunning views is worth a visit for coffee or a light lunch. Suspect the car park gets very busy during peak season but we were there in early June. Amazing the size of the coaches that use the ling winding access road. Also a bit of mecca for cycling enthusiasts but we gave them lots of space and took our time on the climb.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten July 4, 2024

You have to arrive by car or bus, and do it before the parking lot gets full. After paying for the parking, you must walk for about 1.5 km through a shady path. Seen from afar, the building resembles the famous Mont Saint Michel in France, but surrounded by forest, instead of sea, and much smaller. Once in the monastery you start to climb, and after buying your ticket, you proceed to the Staircase of the Dead, which is incredibly steep. Our friends, with knee problems, decided to wait. At the top, the staircase frame is beautifully carved; the church itself was cute but not as magnificent as the ruins of the convent against the green hills. On our way down, we realized there was an elevator for handicapped; you just have to ask at the ticket office.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten August 8, 2024

At the first glance you will think it's a castle, but, inside, you will discover a world of spirituality and holiness. The many steps to reach the top are worthful, because you'll admire a breathtaking panorama and feel a fantastic breeze.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten August 11, 2024

This is a spectacular basilica on a steep promontory near Turin. The view from the valley or on the climb up to the basilica demonstrated an amazing feat of architecture. There is a great view of the valley and the Turin region from the basilica, but the interior of the basilica is rather plain and unremarkable.

The parking is a rip off..only one machine for the different parking areas and the card reader did not work. Whatever money you put in it gave no change, so if you put in 20 euro that is what you paid for parking. The first hour was posted as 2.50 euro, I called the number on the parking ticket and no one answered. When I went to the ticket office in the Sacra the lady told me that it was not part of the Sacra so not her problem…when I told her that was not a service oriented attitude she kindly told me she had other work to do so buy a ticket or move on. For what they charge they should also update the public toilets as well. The hole in the ground that you stand over is reminiscent of the 70’s in Italy.

Visiting this 11th century abbey, constructed upon a mountain not far from Turin, was an experience I shall never forget. It rose like a medieval stone mirage and within the complex are marvelous ruins to explore.. I can honestly say it was one of the most fascinating, magnificent structures I have ever set eyes on. Additionally the entry price was surprisingly inexpensive. I highly recommend it.

I’m not a hiker but I loved this. The hike is a workout, but incredibly rewarding, both the hike and the opportunity to visit the Abbey. The Abbey itself is cool and the views are amazing. Try to make sure it’s a clear day. Easy 30 minute train ride from Torino Porta Nuova to Sant’Ambrogio stop. Quick walk through the village then begin hike behind the town church. Trail is well marked, but there is a transition where you come up to some homes maybe 2/3’s up where it isn’t completely obvious where to go. I’ve been to Torino a number of times and this is a must-do of you have the chance.

When travelling France <> Italy, I often go via the Montgenèvre pass (on the Briançon/Turin road) and could see this monastery from the motorway. So for once, I made time to visit and was very moved. Absolutely wonderful. But as many have said – be prepared to walk, even if you come by car! Monastery founded in the late 900’s (so, over 1,000 years ago!) and was for many years under the Benedictine rule (currently with the Rosminians). Most of the monastery is in ruins (except the chapel), but you can still get a sense of the grandeur of the place. It is one of seven monasteries dedicated to St Michael linking Skellig Michael (Ireland) to Jerusalem. Saint Michael’s Mount (Cornwall, UK) and Mont Saint Michel (Normandy, France) are also part of the series. Take time to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the views. Surprisingly the gift shop and the café are not overpriced. Certainly will visit again and perhaps will make it a day-trip, walking from the valley floor.

How long did you stay there? can you go inside? View... looks like it would be amazing. I'm going to Piedmont in Sept 2020. What are your favorite spots. Vineyards, wine tours, truffles, food, and of course castles!
Written October 26, 2019
Hi
in Sacra San Michele we spent a couple of hours. there is a short climb and then quite a few stairs to get to the top. the church is open. there are several balconies to view the amazing view. it is surely a Must-See.
we went truffle hunting with dogs which was a wonderful experience. the white truffle festival is in October in the city of Alba, very interesting and tasty.
regarding vineyards there are scores of them and wherever you stop you hit a jackpot, the wines are superb.
as for the castles :
Fenis di Castello - was a disappointment as you can only go with a guided tour and they didn't have one in English
Veneria Reale - the gardens are beautiful, the palace has very nice architecture but since it was sacked during the wars it doesn't offer too much regarding furniture and living experience
the palace in Turin was partially closed due to renovations
and finally if you have a chance visit the Damanhur temple, it is a once in a lifetime experience (read my recommendation on TA) - you must book in advance
if you are looking for a place to stay around Turin - we stayed at the Agrotourismo La Farol which was cheap and amazing, wonderful location great premises and great hospitality
let me know if you have any other questions

Salve, vorrei sapere se è possibile fare il giro col cane (ovviamente educato).

Non lo so. Mi sembra sul cammino di avere visto padroni con cani. Non sllinterno del perimetro della chiesa.

Hi folks..... we hope to visit The Sacra di San Michele next week. I am seeing some comments about the travel and shuttle etc., ,from other contributors , but still I am not sure. If we leave Torino by train , say we arrive either 9.43 or 10.13,, will that give us enough chance to catch the shuttle bus from Avigliana to the Sacra and vice versa.
I am not certain if the shuttle bus runs every day or if 1st November is the last day that it is in service. Neither I am so sure about the times of the shuttle bus. Will be greatly obliged if you can give me some info.
thanks and regards
Peter B

Please make sure you find out all the travel information before you go. The train from Torino is fine. What days is it open and what times is it open? Is the shuttle running and at what times? It is a steady 30 minute walk from the bus stop, so all this needs to be taken into consideration.

Vorrei visitare si accede direttamente, o c'è un servizio navetta per evitare posti limitati parcheggio? Bisogna prenotare i biglietti.... è sempre aperto?
Written August 26, 2018
Ciao
buona Visita
