Today we did a self drive in the Dinokeng Game Reserve. Wonderful experience as one feels and is very close to the veld. Facilities are well kept and the drive can be done with a sedan. Some roads are a bit bumpy. Will surely visit...More

We spent a weekend here, and we were not disappointed. It's about an hour long drive from Johannesburg northern suburbs, which makes it perfect for a short getaway. We organised a bush walk, microlight adventure and game drive with the lodge we were staying with,...More

This is a great outing to see a reserve well positioned to become the best sa has to offer. The reserve is still young and needs lots of development and improvement. Book a game drive with one of the many lodges in the reserve, do...More

Glad to hear you enjoyed your game drive. We do have over 100km of self-drive route open to the public which is accessible. The route is marked and you receive a map upon buying your self-drive permit.

My family and I stayed at Chameleon Bush Lodge which is not far from the main entrance into Dinokeng. We booked 2 self catering units next to eachother, each with 2 bedrooms. The units are private with a large enclosed area surrounded by electric fencing....More

Me and some family members stayed at the Almega Caravan Park which was an exellent choice for our first visit, Large stands with own clean ablution facilities were really great. The owner Andre Geyser provided assistance in setting up camp for three groups and delivered...More

Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay. We are constantly trying to improve our map, and there are certain roads that are just for high clearance vehicles only.

The wife and I spent two days in Dinokeng, in Mid May, staying over at Mongena Lodge (see separate review). We chose the self-drive option through the reserve. Entrance is quite expensive, at R280.00 per vehicle per day (compared to e.g. Pilanesberg fees). We spent...More

Relaxing atmosphere and close to the big city! Small game can be seen here occasionaly, however the big 5 seems to hide from us! Large provincial road through reserve spoils night sound of the bushveld....

Wow - this "game" reserve has a number of good points both the brewery and Elephant watering hole for food and drinks. Unfortunately there are two fundamental flaws with this "game" park 1. No animals - 9 hours driving seeing 4 giaraffe, some warthogs, impala...More

We are sorry to hear that you had a disappointing visit. One thing that can never be guaranteed, is where you will see the animals. Sometimes you see them in abundance, and other times you see less animals.

Reviewed 15 May 2017

we were unlucky did not see any animals, probably due to the cold weather. its quite easy to get lost in the reserve because of the road markings/directions.

Sorry to hear you struggled to spot the animals. As winter approaches the bush will thin out, and then spotting animals will be easier. We were blessed with very good rainfall so far. Is there specific areas where you struggled with directions?
