We stopped here on our trip from Thessaloniki to Kavala, after visiting the Eikosifoinissa Convent. There was plenty of room to park even with several bus groups. After paying 6 E each, using a Visa card, we entered the large site beginning with the Theater. Continuing along the ridge, there were long views of the Forum until arriving at Basilica B. Just above was the museum. After viewing its statuary and rare tomb discoveries, we returned on the Forum’s lower level with close views of the Basilica A ruins. Wonderful archaeological site with ruins from the 4th C BC to the 14th C.

Filippi (usually spelled Philippi) is a site of the famous Battle of Philippi and is on the UNESCO list. It's one the best sites in Northern Greece. Do some reading as the signage is almost nonexistent there. A small on-site museum has a few interesting pieces.

This particular archaeological site is one of the most important in the whole of Greece. In the archaeological site you can see the ancient part of the ancient Egnatia street, 3 royal Christian churches, the ancient theater of the city of Philippi and the smaller ancient city as well as votives. It would be good if you visit the place early in the morning or in the afternoon to avoid the heat. In the area there are toilets, a huge free parking lot, cafes and a shop. The ticket is relatively cheap at 6 euros. WHAT I highly recommend to anyone passing through the area.

Amazing place! Full of history - founded by people from Thasos and renamed Philippi by Philip II (Alexander the Great's father). It is also the place (outside the city walls) where Mark Anthony and Octavian fought against Ceasar's assassins Brutus and Cassius. In addition, Saint Paul travelled from Asia Minor to Kavala by boat and then travelled 10 miles inland to Philippi, where he proselytised and converted people to Christianity. The Epistle to the Philippians in the New Testament is Paul's letters to the Christian church in Philippi.

From the time you enter you realise how big this ancient city was. So many things to see and area to visit.
Unfortunately we visited very late and we didnt have the time to explore it all. Also there were some constructions on the site which made it harder to go around.

Ticket cost 6 euros, you absolutely need to have a hat and 1 bottle of water with you, at the entrance however there are many bars and restaurants but I didn't see any fountains in the archaeological park. Ample parking, entry to the archaeological museum is also included in the ticket. Of all the visits I made to Macedonia, the one in Philippi is the one I liked the most.

This was a great site and learning experience. The ancient theater is very impressive and was being set up for a modern concert as I walked through. There are the remains of a Byzantine cathedral, a Roman forum and baths as well as many other Greek & Roman ruins and the prison of St. Paul. Spend a few hours here. Learn about the battle between the inheritors of Julius Caesar and his assassins which happened here as well.

Theater, huge forum (suggesting that the city was quite large in its heyday), multiple basilicas. Different areas will be closed off when you visit depending on where archaeological work is active. We were especially moved by walking on the Roman road that St. Paul almost certainly trod. Very exposed: don't forget your hat!

Discovered recently, this is a truly remarkable site. Extending over a large area, it includes a fine Greek amphitheatre and the prison where Paul and Silas spent a night in the cells and surprised everybody. There are great columns and several churches. Take good shoes!

This place is quite famous in the ancient history. It reached his peak during roman times. The surroundings contain some relatively well preserved mosaics, roman building remainings and ancient theatre. I personally was impressed by the immense stones the romans used to build their buildings - these things were built to last. You should go and visit it. It is close to Kavala and easily accessible by car.
