Over the years, my friends and I have self guided many of the classic paddles along the British Columbia coast, but there always comes a time when we agree it’s time for a “luxury paddle” with Lannie, Ralph and Albert Keller, the family who for over 35 years have given wonderful memories to so many with their company, Coast Mountain Expeditions, located on Read and Quadra Islands. Oh, the delight of once again feasting on Lannie’s exceptional cooking, listening to and learning from Ralph with his vast knowledge of the coast’s history and wildlife, and with thanks to Albert and our excellent guides taking care of the many unseen details that go into making the trip safe, spectacular and fun. Over the years, we have paddled Desolation Sound, the Orford River Grizzly Trip - my, those grizzlies move fast - rented Hill Island, and paddled on our own from Discovery Lodge. This year, July 2023, we had the perfect paddle through the exquisite Octopus Islands.
We highly recommend CME for your West Coast paddling adventure.

I had the grand privilege of being a participant on a Coast Mountain Expedition trip to Desolation Sound this past June. It was spectacular! I loved camping on the various islands in true wilderness settings. Hearing and seeing the humpbacks for more than 24 hrs was magical. The water is so clear, we could do tide pooling explorations from the comfort of our kayak seats. But it's not just about the setting. Our guides were well prepared and knowledgeable to the point where I didn't have a care in the world. Not only did I feel safe navigating the great Pacific waters, their culinary abilities kept us all quite satisfied. Ok, more than satisfied. Just so you know, you will not lose weigh on this trip unless you have great self control as the food is beyond average. We got to eat homemade cheesecake while watching the whales dance about in a remote corner of Cortes Island! This family owned company not only knows how to find the routes and provide high end culinary experiences, they are also excellent stewards of the land. They practice leave no trace wilderness ethics and have fought battles to protect the land. In fact, they haven't stopped fighting battles and are quick pass on their message of stewardship to their clients. I will definitely return to Coast Mountain Expeditions but this time I'll bring some friends.

If you’re looking for an epic kayaking experience, Coast Mountain Expeditions is the company to go with. It’s family owned and run. They’ve been running expeditions for over 35 years and they have it extremely well organized. Food was exceptional! Guides we’re excellent and lovely. The area they offer trips is absolutely spectacular! Wildlife and wilderness abounds. We started with a demonstration of how to paddle using different strokes and how to self rescue and rescue with a partner. We were on the Octopus island expedition, 6 days, 5 nights (2 in a lodge and 3 camping). We were a group of 10 seniors, some with little or no paddling experience. Two guides Katrina and Caelin, the most patient, lovely and capable young women you could meet. I was so proud to have completed 48 km of paddling over 4 days. They offer differing difficulty experiences but this one was perfect for my husband and I. Be prepared to be tired, I’m not saying it wasn’t a fair bit of work. Paddling is not difficult unless the conditions make it so. We had some challenging conditions the second day but we pushed through it and our guides ensured we all made it safely and had a story to tell about our paddle in the washing machine, the result of several islands surrounding us and currents and tides affecting the conditions! Lots of memories were made and I hope to do another trip with CME in the future.

Just returned from the Desolation Sound expedition - 5 days on the water camping and the night before and after at the Surge Narrows lodge. This is a family run business and they really care about protecting the land and sharing it with guests. Equipment was high quality as were the guides (Katrina and Andy) and the food. Food was mostly vegetarian with some fish/clams. They handled individual food restrictions with ease. Just let them know ahead of time. Bread was homemade, lots of veggies (from Lannie’s garden) , cakes and cookies. The scenery, kayaking, wildlife was amazing. The first night camping we fell asleep to the sound of whales blowing all night. The overall vibe was relaxing, a real vacation. We were already talking about our next visit before the trip was over.

I was part of a magical getaway trip at the end of August and am still telling friends about the amazing experience so realized I should leave a review so others can have a wonderful experience.
Every part of the 4 day trip was great- the 2 guides were very knowledgeable about kayaking and marine life but it was their enthusiasm and love for both aspects that added so much to the trip.
Also, they couldn’t do enough to make our trip perfect…..were so willing to help those who needed a bit of assistance. And the food!!! OMG…..homemade
everything- fresh from the garden or locally sourced.
And homemade key lime pie!!
The lodge location is amazing - truly magical to
Watch the sun, the stars or the luminescence which were occurring when we were there.
We finished off our day of kayaking with a fabulous sauna…..there wasn’t anything I would change or
add…..it was a truly memorable experience-
Thank you, Albie and crew

What a wonderful trip! Great route with spectacular experiences: we swam at beautiful beaches and in a lovely secluded lake, we saw wildlife including breaching whales, at night we splashed in the bioluminescence. The guides were efficient, professional, knowledgeable, charming, and great cooks! I will book again.

Our Discovery Islands tour could not have been more perfect. The owners and staff at Coast Mountain have surpassed my expectations in every aspect - equipment is excellent; food is absolutely delicious and nutritious; the accommodation all well set up in beautiful locations; guides were professional, skilled; well informed and fun. I recommend Coast Mountain Expédiions to anyone, experienced or not. I look forward to returning next year. Thank you all!

CME is a top notch outfitter. I recently returned from a five day trip to the Bute Inlet and cannot say enough good things about the experience. The owners, Ralph, Lannie, Albert & Kate are so welcoming and attentive to your needs as well as the guides Anthony and Liam. They provided delicious, creative and nutritious meals and impressed me with their knowledge of the area, the environment, vegetation and wildlife. It was a fun, challenging experience and I highly recommend them.

Hi - Are children welcome in the trips? Our kiddos are 9 and 11. Thanks!

Hi Heather: I am not sure what their policy is and would be worth checking directly with the owners Lannie and Ralph. Some trips so would be better than others I think. The lodge based ones would give you more flexibility if the weather is difficult. Even in a double kayak, if windy, to be safe you need a strong paddler with a child. We kayaked with kids on multi day trips when they were 11-13. I think 9 might be pushing it a bit so you would need to build in ways to manage bad weather. The bay near the lodge is very protected but the day trips can go into areas that are exposed. The company is extremely safety conscious, so if they say it is ok for a 9 year old, it will be. Hope this helps!

What kind of weather might we be experiencing on the Octopus Isl. tour scheduled for 7/24-29?
