As a spinner and dyer this shop was such a treat for me. The owner is very helpful and friendly and takes you on a tour of the mill. He explained the origin of the various tartans . Beautiful assortment of tartans and ready made shawls, scarves, hats and clothes to buy. Prices are good and they have a website... More

Great experience. Idyllic location, real piece of heritage which they work very hard to maintain. Gordon was keen to chat about the history of the place but putting no pressure on purchase. Amazing quality as standard and has produced goods for several notable people and occasions. This includes the film braveheart! A must visit when in the area.

Very cool detour on Islay to see how their items are made. We got a tour upstairs of the huge looms and purchased a blanket and hat.

Great historic setting with ancient machinery. Besides an outstanding variety of fabrics and a (smaller) variety of ready made clothes it is Mr. Gordon Covell, the charismatic owner with his countless most interesting stories about former visitors (yes - the Queen was among them...), who makes the difference.

We parked our cars in the Spar car park and walked through the woods to the Mill. It took around 30 minutes and it was very muddy but all eight of us enjoyed the fresh air! We had a short tour, the shop is tiny. The owner conducted our short tour and very modestly explained how he has provided tartans... More

The gentleman giving the tour was very nice and informative. It was cool getting to see all of the old equipment still working. The entire experience was great. It was like a step back in time.

Nice place in a beautiful setting with a lot of history and very nice products. To be honest we couldn't figure out how many of the products are actually still manufactured on site but we enjoyed our visit and the owners friendliness in showing us around. If on Islay don't miss it.

Small, working wooden mill run by a Father & Son from Yorkshire (?). Shop part of mill so full of stuff it's hard to see the wheat for the chaff, however the mill part is great, AND they will turn it on for you. Son says he put machinery back together (and it's obviously a love of his). In loft... More

My golfing buddy and I visited the Old Woolen Mill in August 2016. This is a remarkable facility that everyone should visit not just because of the history but also because of the fascinating and ancient technology on display. The woolen mill is a sturdy stone building on the banks of a fast-moving stream which had, hundreds of years ago,... More

Quite an interesting place to visit. We stopped in for a quick look-around, and ended up spending a good hour there. They have some very nice woolen products. While not cheap, you can't fault the quality, not every woolen mill does work for the royal family, movies, and Savile Row tailors. Nicely understated as well, unlike Harris Tweed. We had... More
