About
Exciting things are happening in Fortune! The Fortune Head Interpretation Centre is now the Fortune Head Geology Centre. We have a brand-new look, and it only took a few billion years to get there! Our new exhibits will take a broader approach to geology than previous years. If you are interested in the geology of the Burin Peninsula, minerals and rocks, the 1929 Grand Banks Tsunami, or prehistoric animals, our new exhibits are for you! Make sure to keep your eyes open, though - there are also dinosaurs lurking in our new centre! We offer daily tours to the Fortune Head Ecological Reserve, which holds the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) marking the geologic time boundary between the Precambrian era and the Cambrian period. These globally significant, 541 million year old rocks are celebrated at the Fortune Head Geology Centre and mark the beginning of increasing biological diversity of life on Earth. Thanks to the generous donations from Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd., Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and our Province's Department of Business, Tourism, Culture and Recreation, our museum has a whole new look.

We had such a fun time at this museum. It isnt the biggest, so won't take a lot of time, but if you have kids, you'll want to stop here on your tour of the Burin peninsula. I haven't found anything else like it in Newfoundland. They have a ton of interactive elements to their exhibits, including a life sized Velociraptor model which my kids loved. There's lots to touch and enjoy - highly recommend!

The geology centre was much smaller than expected however the guided tour which is included in your price of admission was very informative. We were hoping to go to the ecological reserve but it had just rained and without hiking shoes we were told it was too slippery to go out. It was a good quick stop if you’re looking for something to do in the area.

THis is the last thing we visited before leaving. AS we arrived late in the afternoon, we were given a free pass for the next day. I was surprise as to the amount of information is there on the different rocks dating over 1,000years ago, as well as information and picture of the Titanic and finally information on off shore drilling in Newfoundland territorial waters

Hi there,
Thanks for your enthusiasm, but I believe you have us confused with the Johnson Geo Centre in St. John's, NL. This is Fortune Head Geology Centre, home of the GGSP Boundary of the Precambrian era and Cambrian Period in Fortune, NL.
Please stop by on your next visit!

This place is so small, the wording in it is so technical you'll be bored half to sleep, it's dated and the videos they were playing were riddled with inaccuracies (turns out they were just random YouTube videos???). The only good part about it was the minerals on display. Full stop. If you're in the area, skip Fortune completely. Go to Grand Bank or Saint Lawrence instead.

This is a nice little museum that gives a good overview of the significance of the geology in the area of Fortune and the Precambrian and Cambrian layers that can be found out by the lighthouse. When I inquired about the guided tours to the actual fossil rocks out by the lighthouse, I was told that when covid happened they had to discontinue them and they were never resumed. It’s too bad, as it would have been a great way to see the actual geologic rock with fossils.

The Geology Centre is a small but beautiful place to visit. Try not to let negative "karen" reviews mislead you about this gem. There's a beautiful rock collection, nice gift shop and lots of things to see for adults and children.

Went to the center on Saturday June 15 at 9 AM and it was closed. No hours listed on the building. Drove to the Ecological Reserve for a walk and returned at 1030. The geology center was still not open. No information on their web-page (not updated since 2018) or on FB. Locals say it is open haphazardly.

This is a tiny place, but we paid for the tour (which inlcudes transportation and a guided walk on the ecological reserve), and it was incredible. The guide clearly knew more about rocks than anyone we've ever met before, but he made it easy to understand and appreciate. The exhibit is great (and interactive for the kids), but wouldn't be as good without the guided tour.
The real benefit is the guided trip out to the ecological reserve, which is amazing (he walked us down an unmarked path to the rocks, and showed us fossils that you could have never picked out).

The people here were very friendly. Small museum and a good place to get information before going to the ecological reserve. You get a good sense of the timeline of the geology of the rocks.
