This place, which we visited on the way to the Kakadu, is really excellent. It's overlooked by the hordes going on the the Kakadu, but is a gem in its own right. We stayed at Wildman in the north and drove the Wildman 4WD track one morning. This is highly recommended as long as it's in the dry and you have a proper 4WD vehicle. It doesn't need special driving skills, we saw loads of wildlife and only 3 other vehicles in 5 hours. We also took the walk to Bird Billabong which is great, but you need to go early in the day (don't start out after 10am).

An undiscovered gem - don't miss it.

Mary River is located approximately half way, or 150km south east, between Darwin and Kakadu along the Arnhem highway.

It’s a very popular spot not just for fishing, but also for four-wheel driving, river cruising and has an abundance of bird and wildlife.

You can get some great photographs of the billabongs, crocodiles, flying fox, wallabies and a whole range of bird life.

We spent a relaxing time viewing the area on a Mary River cruise, or alternately, there is the Corroboree Billabong wetlands cruises available.

It’s well worth a few hours here on the way to Kakadu.

Mary River is home to both fresh and salt water crocodiles as well as many species of birds. It is a great spot to launch visits into Kakadu and Litchfield National parks.

Mary River is noted for its croc population. The national park gets you access to the river as well lovely forested areas and associated wetlands, billabongs, birdlife and flora.

Has campgrounds for overnight stays best accessed with a camper trailer.

The main part of our adventure to Kakadu was to spend three days at Mary River Wilderness Retreat.
The quality Poolside Bungalows in lovely shady environment were air conditioned with overhead fans and ensuite bathrooms.
The hosts were most welcoming and did everything possible to ensure a return visit would be at the top of any future adventures...advice about what to do and see was readily made available. We enjoyed the river bush walks - however the late afternoon self drive river cruise was a highlight for us in the little red runabout.
We were also advised to join a sunset cruise of Corroboree Billabong Wetlands - the wildlife was extrordinary and made just that little more interesting because of the comments from the driver/guide...he was fantastic.
The restaurant at Mary River Wilderness Retreat was not quite as good as we had anticipated although it was a delight to have a light breakfast each morning and evening drinks on the deck of the restaurant.
The grounds of the this property would be some of the best in Kakadu/Mary River Region for campers and caravaners.
We will return - and probably for more than 3 days - it is so relaxing and enjoyable.

No one else around, a decent 1 hour walk with a cabin to rest in over the water half way round. Saw a croc, on foot which was fun, lots of birds and a nice little break

Sadly we are just coming out of a very good wet, so not too much was open. But was accessible was enough to tell you we will be back. Once the roads open again and access is back around the billabongs and waterways we will be back for more.

We went on the Spectacular CROC jumping river cruise. Saw a lot of crocs and tons of fantastic birds - kites, eagles and kestrels. Highly recommend it. Very knowledgeable crew.

Just up the road from Wildman’s Wilderness Lodge is Mistake Billabong which is quite secluded and has a boardwalk that goes out over the water to a viewing platform.

It was lovely and peaceful and worth the slight detour.
