They say that this is one of the oldest temples in the area and there is evidence that it existed during the Ayutthaya period. There are many golden Buddhas that surround the temple. It is a very beautiful temple to visit. You can walk to the Mae Klong river. There is also a famous shadow puppet museum, Nang Yai, on the grounds, which is free and open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. They have performances on the weekends and public holidays. Check their website for information on their annual art heritage festival, usually held in August. This ancient art form was once reserved for royalty and is preserved through this museum.

The temple has small museum exhibit hundred years old of shadow puppets. Most were made from cow or buffalo leather. There is a shadow puppet show in daytime, the show is played by local youth along with local youth band. There is small local market selling food and a small local cafe in temple area. Lovely people, very welcoming, even dogs here are so friendly. It is a good idea to visit this place, it is hard to find shadow puppet show like this these days plus you get to support locals 100%. The temple has a night festival where they play shadow puppet at night once a year, you can check on their Facebook page called วัดขนอนหนังใหญ่

This temple is a hidden gem and well worth a visit if you can manage it, as it is one of the only places in Thailand where you can see the ancient Thai art of Nang Yai Shadow puppet drama.
The temple itself is set in large grounds with ancient teak trees. Cheeky monkeys and the usual mangy, but harmless temple dogs roam around as well.
The museum is astounding with many ancient, beautiful, shadow puppet screens made of leather with holes punched to form the outline of the puppet's character. Many are hundreds of years old, and if you arrange a guide at the coffee shop (a tip will be appreciated) you will get to see the back room with original puppets that were damaged in a fire hundreds of years ago.
The museum has brochures in English and Thai explaining the history of this art form, and the story behind the drama performance.
The cost of the brochures and entry to the museum is by donation. It's definitely a worthwhile cause.
The drama performances are free, and are from 10-11am each morning. The performance is mesmerizing with a noisy, live Thai orchestra, and a couple of dozen shadow puppet performers.
If you're interested in authentic Thai culture, or if you appreciate art, this out of the way temple is definitely worth a visit.

The short, free show of the shadow puppets by high school kids showed us how it's done, but as it was during the day, they couldn't show the shadow part, and we saw the backside of the show instead. There's a small, new old market with some food and souvenirs, a man making small key ring shadow puppets so that you can see how it's done, plus the museum. I didn't have the energy to look all the different puppets and read the accompanying stories, but there were some puppets lying around to be used as props.

Quiet place with the ancient wall temple around the temple you will enjoy to feeding the monkeys by buying some fruit from the village nearby very cheap and friendly farmer.

One of the few places that still carry on the tradition of shadow puppet shows.
Shows are for free every Saturday morning, but you can also arrange a private show to suit your travels. the show itself is about 20 minutes, but it starts with explanation of the art and the music instruments, played by the students in the nearby high school (explanation is in Thai, although they have leaflets in English).
They enjoy the interest of visitors, so are very friendly and allowed us to try playing the instruments and holding the puppets (both, a lot harder than it looks....)
The museum is amazing, with old puppet shadows on screens.
The whole experience was astonishing even for non culture buffs, rating very high in our 8 and 9 years old kids

There is traditional thai art museam inside the temple. It's called "Nang yai"
Very beautiful and peaceful place.
You will find the history and the actual Nang Yai. There is th show only on Saturday in the morning.

The display is not too much big and there is some details in English. However if you are without a guide or know some of the Ramayna stories the images will not be much of an interest... Nice side trip if you in the region

Unexpectedly amused by the play. Traditional art are not always boring. The dance was powerful enough, voices were also great using up-to-date language to let people have fun. Great attraction near Bangkok.

at first arriving in rainy season the temple seemed like nothing much, but once you find the museum of shadow puppets and the nice exhitbition in the main building... very interesting... it seems there is a shaddow puppet show every sat morning but missed that.

Hi,
Some sources report that the performances in Wat Khanon are only on Saturday, and some- every day. I'm planning to be there on August 2015.
Do you know what is more accurate (Sat only, or every day)?
