Imatra Rapids was our main reason to visit Imatra. There are construction works and water flow is closed except Saturdays. As we were on a weekday we missed rapids.

we saw the very last "running of water" in Imatra rapids in August 2016. The dam is being reconstructed for 2 years, so no water in the river for 2 years.

Unfortunately we did not experience the waterfall in action this time. The place is still worth visiting.

They let the water run through the dam/caldron once a week, on Saturday evening. Very crowded by the bridge and rapids already early before the exact time. I waited for something wild and furious, not really that. But maybe worth one time.

Imatra waterfall or rapids is absolutely worth of seeing, when ever the open (partially) the gates once a week. It gives us an understanding of the raw power of the water and at the same time such a beautiful view. Recommended!

Music and light and water - you won't regret if you visit the waterfalls when it's being opened. Spectacular!

The Imatra rapids is 'active' at specific show-times, particularly in the summer. It is quite a display, widely admired particularly in the past century.

We were visiting on the way to North Karelia. Very impressive when the rapid Imatrankoski opens! Recommend also walking the channel route and visiting Valtionhotelli nearby.
