About
Due to the rough terrain, the Barac Caves are one of the few karst speleological sites of the area that can be accessed. Once you “disappear” into the underground, an astounding world beneath the earth will reveal itself to you, generously letting you in. An expert guide will take you on a 60-minute walk down an illuminated path among the majestic dripstones, telling you all about its formation that took thousands of years, its geological structure and valuable archaeological findings. He will take you back in time, showing you numerous stone monuments, the former habitat of the cave bear, the site where a medieval bronze bracelet was discovered... The guided tour turns absolutely silent and dark for a moment, allowing you to absorb this unique experience of the underground and carry it with you forever. All of the tours are organised in the company of a guide. The temperature inside the cave rarely exceeds 9 degrees throughout the year, so we recommend wearing suitable clothes.

Not far from the lakes are the local caves. Tours start each hour around :50 but plan to be there no later than :40 to be sure you don't miss the start.  The parking lot is 450m walk (although there are a few spots closer) and then you need to buy a ticket. The tour starts with a 200m walk uphill to the cave, stopping to pick up your helmet.  But if you have time beforehand or after,  there is a playground, large swing, badminton and nice lounging benches, as well as ice cream and drinks at the kiosk.

We have been to a few different caves but these are definitely worth a visit.  As noted in the reviews,  the tour guides are really good and speak excellent English.  The route lasts about an hour.  You only walk through 200m of the cave (easy walking, don't forget it is 9C) but stop to learn about the cave, the  bones they have found, etc. We really enjoyed it and were happy we spent an hour here. Unfortunately there aren't many bats left due to the light and sounds of tourists (a few flying around if you are lucky to see them). Definitely recommended!

We weren’t originally planning on visiting but we had several days of bad weather so thought the caves may be a good option, we were pleased we visited.
They are situated off a tiny road several miles off the main road, on arrival there was a small car park with the nicest toilets I’ve ever been in at a tourist attraction!!
It was pouring with rain when we arrived so bought our tickets and waited under some shelters until the tour was ready to go.
The guide was great (I don’t remember his name) and gave the commentary in English and German, it was humorous and educational.
We really enjoyed our visit and used the discount voucher to visit the attached museum up the road. Unfortunately the rain meant we didn’t do the walks and no one was able to make use of the play area/ equipment but they would enable you to extend your visit on a dry day. Would recommend.

Really nicely set up and in a beautiful location surrounded by forest, a spring and picturesque countryside. We went on a rainy day and it was still lovely, but it would be an especially stunning place for a picnic or family afternoon on a sunnier day. The cave itself is relatively small but still very interesting and definitely worth a visit. Our tour guide Marko was great - super informative and had lots of good jokes - we really enjoyed ourselves! The bats were super cute (see first photo) and we even saw a little salamander in the river. Would recommend!

Interesting caves but have seen much better elsewhere in the world. The tour in the caves only lasts about 25minutes as the rest of the time is involved with climbing up the hill and sorting out the hard hat. I was devastated as to the number of people on this tour who neither worn masks or kept a reasonable distance from me and each other. When I commented to our guide she shrugged her shoulders. This really spoilt the experience for me.
Wondered on one of the walks which was lovely and peaceful
Make time for even the shortest one which is only 1.2km and tales about 20 minutes.
Hope this helps you all

We are sorry that our cave site didn't impress you. We try to portray the caves we present as they are, without magnifying it. We do not compare our caves with caves from other countries because each cave is different and difficult to compare, but each has its own values and beauties. Tour includes outdoor and indoor part of guidance. As you were “climbing up'', your guide described the remaining three caves and the reasons why you cannot visit them, as process of origin caves in general, as well. We are sorry to hear that you have not experienced the tour entirely. Given the current circumstances, we adhere to the recommendations issued by the Civil Protection Headquarters (regarding the number of people in the group and the recommendation to maintain social distance), according to their decisions, mask does not need to be worn in case of visiting nature sights. At the begining of the tour visitors have been asked to keep the distance. We're glad you enjoyed touring the hiking trails and thank you for taking the time to write this review. Kind regards.

We got perfect tour with guide from ticket office, Antonio.

The group was small, 6 people. First there was a story in Croatian, then in English. We learned a lot about the life of people and animals in the caves. Local bats were in hibernation and they are not scary at all. We are very grateful for an interesting and informative tour!
Price was 12 euro for adult, tour was about 1 hour.

The caves are a very nice place to spend an hour or two. The tour was very informative and interesting, and was given in English. It's a bit off the beaten track so best reached if you have a hire car as taxis to here are quite expensive, but for the price of entry it's definitely worth a visit

Dear Lydia, Thank you for your kind words. We are glad to hear you enjoyed your visit! Also, except from taxi's, it is possible to get to us with a bicycle (or e-bike) independently or accompanied by a bike-guide from the area. Also, there are nearby ranches that organize hourse-riding tours to Barać caves, which is truly a unique experience. Best regards from Barać caves team!

What a unique marvel…rivals some of the best caves we have visited globally! The knowledgeable guide taught us the history, geology, and archeological and anthropological significance of this cave and the numerous cave systems throughout the country. There are remains of ice age animals found in the cave and artifacts have been found dating back to the Neanderthal period. It is a cool 9 degrees Celsius year round, which is fabulous in the heat of the summer. Take a jacket…

The new Speleon Visitor Center is a “must” to accompany your cave visit - a very short 500 meter drive away!

A guide accompanies all visitors to the cave. The guide we had was wonderful. His explanations and the things he pointed out made the visit even more meaningful. The cave itself was interesting, but not spectacular like Carlsberg Caverns or Mammoth Cave. However the park service has gone to considerable effort to enhance the site with exhibits, benches and other amenities which made the visit enjoyable. Croatia obviously takes great pride in its natural wonders, making them a pleasure to visit.

Very interesting tour around the Cave, we really enjoyed it. It was quite big in size and the tour lasted about an hour. Filip was a great guide, giving the tour in both English and Croatian which I felt very grateful for. We had our 2 yr old with us and it was mostly safe, we had to hold her sometimes out of caution but other than that it is perfectly fine for children. You are given a safety helmet which came in handy, especially for my 6ft tall husband when dodging the stalactites. It is a bit of a walk up to the cave entrance, which may be a struggle to some people but well worth it.
It is chilly in the cave (about 7 degrees when we were there) so bring a jacket if you do not like the cold. We did not need one as we are from the UK and are used to the cold. 😅

There is also a little playground on site which is lovely for the kiddies if you have a little bit of a wait. Toilets are very clean too which is always a bonus.

A great experience and good value, Highly recommend!

We followed road signs here on the way back from Plitvice and it was a worthwhile trip. The tour took around 1hr and our guide Ante was very knowledgeable and funny. It was interesting to learn the history of the cave over time as well.
