It really is a creation replete with exquisite ornamentation. Remarkable artistry in stone carvings is everywhere evident.

Moving beyond a fabulous façade leads to a wonderful interior. Graceful columns in light hued stone rise to a ceiling rich in lovely motifs.

Gazing along the nave brings the eye to a fabulous high altar that dazzles in its gilt and holy imagery.

Built between the 15-16th Centuries, The Church of San Miguel is located in a part of the old town of Jerez that was originally outside the city walls. The area became very affluent and the local aristocracy and businessmen spared nothing to lavish the church with art and decoration.
The impressive facade, towering above you with tall columns and powerful statuary, represents the victory of Roman Catholicism in Spain over the Reformation movement.
Inside the cavernous, vaulted church, the first thing that strikes you is the incredible altarpiece. Completed over half a century after it's first commission, the central figure shows an isolated Lucifer looking forlornly towards the Ascension of Christ, as his companions are dragged in to hell. Very powerful Catholic iconography, but even without the religious element, a stunning piece of art well worth seeing.
The rest of the church is studded with crypts and art bestowed on the church by wealthy benefactors over the centuries.
For only €2 this is well worth a visit. However, check for opening times- we had to squeeze it in the morning we left, as it was closed to tourists on the Sunday.

If you have to chose, go to this lovely church, more interesting even than the cathedral. There is a beautiful golden altar piece.

Straight forward church to look around. Could have been more helpful/interesting if there had been some English explanations.

This church has a great interior, with a very impressive altarpiece, with a fascinating depiction of the devil and the fallen angels in hell. A very grim looking Satan gazes out at you - quite spooky really. The whole altarpiece is worth spending some time looking at and there's a handy guide to all the saints on display, in case you can't remember your religious iconography. It's only a couple of euros to see it and it is worth going to see when in Jerez.

Very unusual carvings on this Baroque church off a arrow side street, which becomes a little tree embellished square. The stone carvings, particularly on the columns on thr front aspect of the church are some of the best I have seen.

We were walking and got lost and came upon this lovely church set in a square of the same name surrounded by orange tress. Built in the 16th century this church is well worth a visit.

Although my wife and I are not of the RC denomination, this church is a"must see" for all of any or no faith. The sheer detail, workmanship and scale of its interior is incredible. Especially when you think of the age(pre Bosch,Black&Decker et al) in which it was built. 2euros entrance! a deal indeed.

The gem of the church has an unusual altarpiece by the master Martínez Montañés and José de Arce.

Outstanding portrayal of the archangel against the demons of hell. These devils are so contemporary!

Lovely to visit on a trip to Jerez but €5 each to enter! Very quiet but beautiful. Definitely worthwhile seeking it out.
