First time I'd seen a chariot race track in my travels, so it was pretty interesting. Surrounding parts of the city are pretty basic, but the track itself is worth a look. We walked around the grandstands and track area, which gives you a sense...More

Merida seems to divide its Roman ruins into two parts - the ones which they think tourists will visit (which have good signage and information in English) and the rest. The Roman Circus is definitely in the latter category, unfortunately. It is slightly off the...More

One can imagine that in Roman times the chariot races etc that were held here would have been magnificent. However, there is very little left in terms of buildings but the track is large and the spectators would have had a good view of the...More

Because Roman circuses occupy so much space it is unusual to find a site which really gives a good impression of the sheer size and grandeur of such places. This does so - situated on the outskirts of Merida (we drove and were lucky to...More

Large open area that is fenced off with a single entrance exit point. You can easily imagine the chariots going round. Well maintained area giving a good impression of times gone past.

This is a very rare historical feature. Most of these hippodromes (Roman circus) have long since disappeared due to their sheer size. Although this sight has in the past been ploughed as a wheat field and has had a road run through it, it is...More
