Aromatic and beautiful

Marayoor is a small town located around 40 kms from Munnar. Sandalwood forest is one of the main attractions here.The forest is on the way to Chinnar wildlife sanctuary.

Here you will get to see acres of land covered with huge sandal wood trees. This is a protected area and each tree is numbered. Trees are fenced. You can just watch them from a distance. Tampering them is a serious offense and you might land up in jail.

If you pass by during evenings, there are chances of spotting a deer, bison or an elephant.

Rare Sandalwood Aroma & Fragrance all around

On the way to Chinar Wild life sanctuary, there are great natural forest of Sandalwood. There are rare plantation of sandalwood trees, which are guarded and protected by Forest Department of Kerala Government. The entire forest is spread over acres of undulated hills and land.The sandalwood trees are numbered and marked for identification. The whole forest area is protected behind barbed fence. The area is shady and one feels great aroma and fragrance of sandalwood in the air, while driving through the forest area. A lovely place.......

Natural Beauty!!!!!!!!!!!

Marayuris a remote village on the eastern slopes of the western ghats.New stone- age civilization has been unearthed here.Good place to enjoy.It has ancient stone cabins,called MUNIYARAS.Really beautiful.This is the only place in Kerala having natural growths of sandal wood trees.
This place got more than 1000 species of flowering plants and is a well known repository of medicinal plants.
Chinnar-the wildlife sanctuary in Marayur has recorded the largest number of reptilian species, including the crocodile,in Kerala.You can enjoy large variety of birds also.This place got more than 225 species of birds,it is one of the richest areas of south India in avian diversity.We saw lots of giant variety of squirrel.Do visit this place.

Can't go in the sandalwood forest

I was under impression that you can walk in the forest and touch the sandalwood trees. When I visited that you can only see the trees along sides of the road. The forest department has rightly put high fence and tagged sandalwood trees to prevent illegal activities. I had kept the car windows rolled down as other people mentioned you get to smell sandalwood aroma. But I couldn't get the fragrance at all. This patch of trees is about 5 to 6km and drive is heavenly. If lucky you may get to see an animal. When I went in the afternoon to chinnar wildlife sanctuary, I didn't see any wild animal. On the way back at night I spotted a deer and an elephant.

Marayoor sandalwood forest

Marayoor, located forty km from Munnar, is a rain shadow village lying in the eastern side of the Western Ghats and is bordered by the neighbouring state Tamil Nadu. Marayoor is the only place in Kerala with a natural growth of sandalwood trees.

Marayoor as a pristine, heavenly and unexplored tourist spot is comparable to Munnar which is one of the most sought after hill stations in India in every respect. The place is especially an excellent trekking spot for adventure seekers.

The road from Rajamala to Marayoor is flanked by lush green tea estates.Then you come across the sandalwood forest. First, the trees appear one by one, and soon these turn into a sea. The air is cool and one comes under the rain shadow area.

Real forest....

It was a fantastic journey through the natural sandalwood forest, pleasure to see stupid monkeys roam around the forest and also had a great chance to see some cute little deer's...
When we reach marayoor please do must visit kanthalloor, it is just a nice place but much humid.
Kanthalloor is the perfect place for buying good quality and tasty marayoor jaggery....

Sandal wood forest

Cheap stay near in sandal wood forest. Forest was awesome and well maintained with fence. we have walked for some distance and enjoyed the place.

Beautiful Forest!

I never seen a sandal forest ever. My friends offered a ride to there and I enjoyed alot. The beauty was mesmerizing.
