A week ago en route to Grasslands National Park, on a sunny Saturday afternoon, my wife and I stopped at this old railway station in this sad-sack town near where I grew up in the 60s and 70s . The building includes one small room with a paltry collection of old things and another that sells trinkets and coffee. To be nice, my wife bought some locally knitted dish rags.

Leaving, we had to walk past a table of elderly locals, and to make conversation I asked whether the pot-holed rural road to Grasslands park was well marked. The question (or was it my hat?) triggered one old fart, who told us we'd see "where our tax dollars were going". It seemed incongruous that a local would oppose a park that was the only reason anyone would ever stop at this dying and isolated hamlet, so we said nothing. Then (and I swear the geezer's upper lip was twitching) he said, "I suppose you're liberals. I should throw you out of town." A short volley followed about Ottawa and taxes. The others at the table were mute, and appeared bemused - just Jethro being Jethro, I suppose. We didn't respond, and quickly left.

I see now that the feeble yet aggressive redneck and his timid table of enablers were the most authentic thing about this "visitor centre". Grasslands NP is wonderful; small-town Saskatchewan, these days, is not. Sad.

We arrived at the visitor centre early one Sunday morning when the centre was closed. Thankfully one of the ladies that worked there just happened by to welcome some visiting paleontologist coming through from Alberta. She let us in, made us coffee, showed us around the interesting exhibits there and gave us directions to some amazing hiking trails around town. Great experience.
