Gas Stop Turned into a Step back in Canadian History

This friendly small town on the shores of Lake Huron had to be investigated. It is about 65Km east of Sault Ste Marie. I read that it was founded in 1846 as Canada's first copper... read more

This friendly small town on the shores of Lake Huron had to be investigated. It is about 65Km east of Sault Ste Marie. I read that it was founded in 1846 as Canada's first copper mine. A town like this must be steeped in history. So we made time and The Simpson Mine Shaft was our choice. It offered us... More

It is a small tour but inexpensive. We paid $8 for family of four for a guided tour of the mine. The guiding girl was very friendly to the kids. the mine is not very big, but gives you idea how copper was mined in Ontario over a century ago. Recommend it to others.

This is a historic copper mine. It's right by the highway so a good place to take a break from driving. Our guides, both students, really knew their stuff and gave an informative tour. You can also view rock samples and artifacts at the museum. Bonus: clean washroom!

My daughter and I enjoyed visiting this mine. We enjoyed listening to the guide explain the mine. It was not too expensive to take part in this tour.

Even if you are afraid of going down a mine shaft which I am it is great to stop and take in the history of Copper Mining and the remnant mine shafts that are located all around this small town on the picturesque Bay of Lake Huron! The turn off is just next to the Legion as you enter the... More
