This wetland nature reserve has something to offer everyone and will appeal to families, walkers, birdwatchers and photographers alike. With 8 hides and 3 large lagoons the reserve plays host to a variety of species such as Tufted duck, Common tern, Green sandpiper, Cetti's warbler, Kingfisher, Water vole, Fox, and most recently Black-necked grebe. A great place for children and families with spotter trails, regular events and a monthly wildlife explorer club, but also very popular with birders and people after a relaxing walk or some peace and quiet. The friendly visitor centre offers two classrooms, a bird feeding station, hot and cold drinks and refreshments, and toilet facilities, plus free parking for RSPB members. Opening times are every day from 9 am to 5 pm (or dusk if earlier). Please note that the reserve is closed on Christmas and Boxing Day.

An excellent walk round an nature reserves. The hides are well sited and provide excellent views of the lakes and therefore the birds. The Kingfisher hide will not disappoint as views of the beautiful bird are very common during the summer.

I took my 3 1/2 year old grandaughter to this event. First visit to the nature reserve..what a wonderful find! Very well organised and interactive. Emma, the story teller, was brilliant and engaged well with all the children. Would highly recommend the event and also the nature reserve. I will definetly return as so much to see and do. A... My first visit here and I thoroughly enjoyed it. A quiet, peaceful reserve with easy walks. There are numerous, very well constructed hides. Can get very busy with photographers at times! There's loads of wildlife to see including common terns, black tailed godwit, green sandpipers, ducks, geese, swans and also a little egret. There were fledglings of various sorts and... More

I've been with my little one 4 yrs old and we have learnt a lot about bugs . The people who works there really love nature and their job. They transmit their interest for the animal world even for the smallest creatures. I admire their enthusiasm and appreciate their dedication. We will come back again to learn more. A bit... More

As an avid RSPB member I'm always looking for a reserve I can visit when travelling. I made quite a big detour from my destination to stop in and see what Rye Meads had to offer. I had only an hour to explore as after a 4 hour drive so didn't really get a good look round but had some... More

Kingfishers are the star attraction here no doubt, especially when breeding. Plan for a few hours - its quite small but there is plenty to see. Staff at the centre are very helpful and welcoming. Facilities are clean too. Well maintained grounds - don't forget your camera!

I love this RSPB reserve. It is an hour from my home but doesn't deter me from going whenever I can... atleast once a month. Kingfishers are the star attraction for lot of birders around... but i go for a walk with 100s of Robins... :)... if you are around plan a few hours... you will love it. Note: good... More

Went to see the kingfishers and we were not disappointed. We saw them feeding, mating and just posing for the camera. An extensive reserve with many good quality, clean hides and plenty of wildlife to see. Very impressive.

Great place, spoilt by the noisy go kart site, pumping music and petrol heads. It is such a shame as this site is an amazing site and would be so so so peaceful without the go kart site nearby. The huts and grounds are well kept and staff are very good. facilities are also good. kids loved it.
