This wetland nature reserve has something to offer everyone and will appeal to families, walkers, birdwatchers and photographers alike. With 8 hides and 3 large lagoons the reserve plays host to a variety of species such as Tufted duck, Common tern, Green sandpiper, Cetti's warbler, Kingfisher, Water vole, Fox, and most recently Black-necked grebe. A great place for children and families with spotter trails, regular events and a monthly wildlife explorer club, but also very popular with birders and people after a relaxing walk or some peace and quiet. The friendly visitor centre offers two classrooms, a bird feeding station, hot and cold drinks and refreshments, and toilet facilities, plus free parking for RSPB members. Opening times are every day from 9 am to 5 pm (or dusk if earlier). Please note that the reserve is closed on Christmas and Boxing Day.

Terrific nature Reserve

I spent a glorious day at Rye Meads, photography is a big passion of mine, especially photographing birds. The birdlife there is amazing and the hides are very good.

We visited with grand children when they had a special day for children to turn over logs looking for bugs etc. last summer. Brilliantly done with knowledgeable volunteers who made visit great fun. It is an extensive reserve, it felt like we had walked 2 miles after we had done the bird hides. A kingfisher was our best sighting. Good... More

I was aiming for a walk today and decided as it was a beautiful sunny day I looked up the nature reserve to make sure I knew where it was exactly even though I actually live up the road from the marshes. I remember going there when at primary school. It is easy to find. The volunteers are really friendly... More

We have taken our children, aged 5 and 3 to the Explore and Art afternoon a couple of times now and both times they have really enjoyed it. It's a nice mix of outdoor exploration and arts and crafts and the lady who runs it, Tina, is really lovely with all the children. The reserve is very nice and because... More

Such a hidden gem. We were blown away by its beauty. Lovely layout. Every hide has a new vista to enjoy. Great for a rural walk or a twitchers paradise. Allow 2-3 hours . Nice on site shop too.

I visited the nature reserve on a photographic walkabout and expected a little more than I received. Although the weather was cold but sunny it was a pleasant walk around the reserve but you can't expect too much in early March. However apart from seeing one Kingfisher at a distance there was nothing much else to excite unless you are... More

I popped in to Rye Mead as I was travelling home from Milton Keynes. I am a RSPB member so it was free entry for me but if you are a non member there is a small car parking charge. The staff were helpful and gave me a map and told me a little about the reserve and what to... More

This place is good for a few hours to keep the kids entertained. Well worth a visit. Kids can go inside as well as explore the outside area. There are birdwatching areas where kids can identify birds that they can see.
