Palm Valley was just gorgeous. We came about 23 years ago with small kids and found the campground organised and amenities consisting of a communal fire pits (with so many families cooking their dinner - it was awesome swapping recipes), shower and toilets.
Fantastic 4WDing into Palm valley past the campground, (July 2024)
Low range, Consists of two small water crossings (one tiny), Jump ups
- Good Wheel placement necessary
Deep sand in sections
Very Fun drive
Amazing walk (totally worth staying a couple of nights)
5km Mpaara Walk from the campground - fascinating Dreamtime story (grade 3 - but saw someone running the track!!!!!)
My advise would be to start the walk anti clockwise as the other way was continually steep for decent periods of time and some scrambling up steep rocks. Take lots of water on sunny days even if you think it’s cooler.
Totally recommend Palm Valley if you have a 4WD vehicle - we absolutely loved it (as reluctant but active seniors) and it seemed all the families and couples around us did too.
The Valley was spectacular and seeing all the juvenile palms was so fascinating and encouraging. One family found a group of tiny tree frogs - so gorgeous and the kids had a spectacular very hands on experience.
My husband put up his drone and got some amazing photos (drone permit is a must)!

The drive in is 4wd only and requires high clearance, camped 4km from the valley with an awesome view of the stars, no light pollution. Last 4km is fun 4wd only
Two walks through the valley are beautiful

An interesting part of the Northern Territory landscape. The valley is named after the Red Cabbage Palm which is restricted to this area with a population of 12,000 plants – also lots of cycads. We did two hikes - Arankaia walk & Kalarranga walk - both of which offered great views across the landscape including the Finke River, a river they think is the oldest in the world.

The road in there is quite good condition but if you want to drive in to the parking area you will definately need a 4x4 and an experienced driver. Not for the faint hearted and one of the most challenging 4x4 tracks we did on our holiday. You can do a tour and they will get you in there easily. The walk along the bottom is good but nothing special. We did 3kms of the loop and then walked back and up to the cliff walk which gives you the best views into the valley.Quite busy with tourists that day but a pleasant walk.I dont know that it was worth the hard trek in there but we did it and ticked the box.Drop in the Hermasberg for an eye opening experience after and see the historic sights

Just an amazing experience. you will need a high clearance 4WD - and be ok with a little bit of a rocky car ride. The turn off is about 1 hour from Alice and then the fun begins...easy (rocky, dusty) track fro about 16KM - then it gets interesting - just pop the car into Lo speed and go slowly - you will be rewarded with hardly anyone there and being transported into a different world.

Ensure you go there with high clearance 4WD! Great camping grounds, showers and toilet- we had it to ourselves. Lots of wild horses, be aware of weather forecast, you don’t want to be caught there in rain! Amazing rock formations!

As we bounced, vibrated and rocked down the Finke river bed then the palm creek bed Bluey, our driver, kept up a fascinating commentary about the geological and aboriginal information regarding this amazing place. A thoroughly enjoyable trip, the other passengers were great and Bluey was a fount of knowledge, able to answer all our questions and he did it with a joke, a smile and a friendly manner. It felt like we were saying goodbye to a friend at the end of our trip. I would recommend Emu Run Tours for anyone wanting to go to palm valley.
