Lovely grounds.

We had popped in earlier today as it's practically on our doorstep. I haven't been since I was little- and didn't have high hopes for it to be honest, but I was wrong! I... read more

There is something beautiful and evocative about this site. No, it's not Riveaulx or Jervaulx, it is much more humble than those. What it does have though, is a greater sense of the personal lives of those who once lived here, toiling as they were under the false premise of a divine being. Put the religious tomfoolery to one side... More

This place must have been outstandingly beautiful in its heyday and is still amazing. A tribute to English Heritage and very interesting to go up the winding stairs to the gatehouse upper floors and discover the interior. Look our for lots of interesting graffiti left by previous visitors over the years.

I love my history more than anything, even the booze, but this place just left me a bit disappointed. The positives are beautiful location, and the gatehouse is certainly very impressive, mixed together with the haunted history of the place. Negatives are that it's just a bit boring; I know it's a ruin but there just isn't a lot there... More

We really enjoyed our visit to this attraction & were blown away by the very impressive gatehouse. It is fairly well intact & has many different rooms to explore, which is certainly ideal if you have kids. There is quite a lot of well laid out exhibits & information boards for you read, which gives you a good appreciation about... More

We had popped in earlier today as it's practically on our doorstep. I haven't been since I was little- and didn't have high hopes for it to be honest, but I was wrong! I appreciated it much more, there's so much history and architecture it was beautiful. Lovely staff, so polite and helpful, well kept ground and a picnic area... More

Took a cycle ride with some friends to the Abbey unfortunately we only had our tea and cake money with us so unable to pay English Heritage entry fee. Very nice even though we didn't see all of the Abbey.

Live close by so it's always an option if we find ourselves just wanting to some where different for a walk or explore. There is so much history in the buildings. The lady that works on reception is always friendly and welcoming. There are a few things that kids can enjoy doing on the floors in the gatehouse and us... More

From the Internet, you are only able to gain little sense of the sort of place it is. It's, in fact, way more interesting that I thought it would be. No doubt more people make this error of judgement – a most understandable error. I heartily recommend this place. There is a picnic area in front of the gatehouse. Free... More

I have seen the gatehouse many times from the outside and thought it spectacular. It's even better close up and I was amazed when I found out that there was an inside to it and you could go in and explore the little staircases, corridors and big halls. There is some fascinating information displayed on boards and not too much... More
