This is one of the few sand beaches on the rocky coast of Newfoundland (and it is fairly large). Even more unique is the fact that the sand is black, although depending on the sun, sometimes is does not appear real black.

There was a CASH charge of $2.00 per person to enter the area.

Worth the time to check out if you are somewhat close to the area.

This is a lovely beach situated 1.5 hours from St. John's. All you have to do is follow highway signs to Carbonear then continue to Salmon Cove. At the start of the road to Salmon Cove Sands there is a large sign pointed down the road. You can't miss the sign! It's what helped me to go in the right direction. Then just follow the road to the very end.

The beach is well maintained with no noticeable trash. There was a fee of $2.50/person to get in the park or $7/vehicle. The added bonus was the place is dog friendly they just have to remain on a leash. The beach is accessible with short trail to follow that brings you the beach. The parking is very nice, there are outhouses with hand-sanitizer, picnic area, beach volleyball area, lookout, walking trail, canteen area (I noticed the sign for it but did not go), and the beach has a greyish (pea) sand. Going in the water was great for children as you could walk out some distance in different parts of the beach before it got very deep.

Well worth a visit! While the water isn't the warmest the atmosphere is very relaxing.

We packed a cooler and spent the day at Salmon Cove. It's a beautiful beach. The water is really too cold to 'swim' in, but our children loved just slashing near the shore and playing in the sand - it's perfect for sandcastles. If you go to the far end of the beach, there's a small stream that flows out into the ocean; that water is warmer and we did swim in that. There is an island just out from the shore and at low tide you can walk to it. This is a great place to visit for a few hours or a day to really relax.

Visited there numerous times but only once this year. There is a fee for entry. There are outhouses and change areas and a faucet to rinse sand of your feet.

The beach is nice, it's sandy. The water is quite cold and of course, this can't be controlled. The attitude and hospitality of staff can be controlled. No smiles here, no hellos, no thanks yous. The canteen service was awful; the woman working there was awful. Each item we asked for, she did not have and then went on to say that if it's busy on Saturday then they run out on Sunday and don't have time to go to the store. What kind of business is this? if you know you will be busy on the weekend, maybe shop on Thursday? I also found it unsanitary given that there is no running water there and only hand sanitizer (and to be fair, I did witness the employee use it). Handling money and food and using utensils to handle raw food and cooked food, all questionable practices. Wear some gloves! I must say that I have been feeling sick ever since then which may or may not be related to the food preparation. Just don't eat there and avoid interactions with the staff, you might enjoy the rest!
The change areas were poorly taken care of and not at all private, there were no doors on these spaces so make sure you don't go alone and have a buddy to be your look out. There were sanitary napkins left in the change room. Used sanitary napkins. If you have staff to direct traffic then you need staff on the look out for this kind of filth.
Deeply disappointed.....

I misplace my perception glasses Someone found them and turned them in. I, made several efforts to retrieve them by someone else. unsuccessful. I called to make sure they were on hand for me to pick up, she said they were no longer there, maybe some threw them out. These glasses were. 2 weeks old . So don't leave any personal stuff behind. That was our first trip there

Salmon Cove Sands is a beautiful sandy beach nestled away in a beautiful cove. It's clean, lots of picnic tables and a few gazebos to sit at, and there are even volleyball nets there. Over to the far left, there is a fairly large stream where children slash and play in that flows into the ocean. It's always warmer than the ocean itself so great for wading. Gorgeous place to spend a hot day in Newfoundland!

Salmon Cove Sands is a beautiful spot with soft, dark sands and salt water. Once you can get past the cold water, the water is quite lovely to jump in, especially when there's light waves. Before you reach the beach there's a grassy spot with picnic tables and a gazebo next to a canteen. It really is a nice place to spend a day playing on the beach making sand castles and swimming. While we were there we saw a whale off in the distance.

The only downside is a small change room with only enough space for one person to change at a time (but it's clean), and the outhouses (which are also kept as clean as possible). There's also a small charge to get onto the beach, but it's worth it if you are spending a day there.

While in Salmon Cove we stayed at William's Rest which overlooks the Beach. For three magnificent days we enjoyed looking at the Salmon Cove Sands both at sunrise as well as sunset. It is truly a little slice of Paradise. One morning ,before sunrise I went down to the beach to photograph the sun rising. What an experience. If your in the area it is a must see.

Sand, water, a volleyball net, and the rugged coastline of Newfoundland, what more can you want? The perk of this beach is that it is smaller than the widely visited Northern Bay Sands. It also draws a smaller crowd, and not many people know of its greatness. My husband and I had a great time soaking up the rays, and wading in the water. There were some families and young people around, but not crowded. There is a small take-out canteen onsite, and also a washroom & changing room.

It costs a couple dollars to go in the beach, but its worth it.
