I was delighted to see the lively town of san francisco de macoris (a lot of businesses and stores) and the Hacienda La Esmeralda where El sendero del cacao is.They have made a great job in creating this interesting excursion where at the same time you can enjoy a beautiful environment and learn about the cocoa growing and how the... It is interesting, the guide was knowledgeable, her English was good. The tour group was small and personalized. It was very expensive for the Dominican Republic. The lunch was limited in choices and not well cooked. I have wanted to learn more about cacao growing, and the production of chocolate so I was very interested in the tour. It was... More

You have to drive almost 2 hours from Santo Domingo to Hacienda La Esmeralda, where is El Sendero del Cacao in San Francisco de Macoris. I have seen many tours in many countries. If you like chocolate, this is a must go for you. They have made a great arrangement in the ranch, to show you how cacao is grown,... More

We took a Caribe Tour bus from SD to San Francisco and a driver from Sendero picked us up at the bus terminal. Taking a bus was a bit of an adventure but it was fun and the ride was very comfortable (took about 90 minutes). The tour at Sendero was great. Our guide walked us through the entire process... Girl at tour office said this was not a good tour but boy was she ever wrong. Since we wanted to experience more than city and beach we made reservations online through cacaotour.com yesterday and went today anyway. Well worth the almost 2 hour drive from Santo Domingo. Miguel offered a very informative and fun tour with help from Julio... More

This tour is organized in plantations owned by the Rizek family, the second largest cocoa producer in the Dominican Republic (DR) and a leader in premium organic cocoa supplied to Valrhona or to the most prestigious European chocolate makers, such as Michel Cluizel in Normandie (France). It takes place in a charming facility named "Hacienda La Esmeralda".   Overall, the... More
