I am writing this review because so many of the previous reviews seem to expect something other than a botanical garden, and expect a manicured presentation of the plants. We had a very interesting walk through the Jardín, learned quite a bit about numerous trees, and even saw some (unexpected) animals. I would definitely recommend it as a lovely change from beach-time while in Puerto Morelos or nearby, particularly if you have any interest in plants.
The Jardin offers a fascinating walk through the transition zone between coastal mangroves and the semi-deciduous forest. There is signage in English and Spanish (some signs are only in Spanish) describing the major trees with information about the type of tree and how it has been and is used by people. In addition, there are a few cultural recreations -- a Mayan village, a chiclé harvesting campsite -- and a small archeological site. In addition, a viewing tower has been rebuilt so you can glimpse the whole area from on high if you wish.
It is very low-key, but a great way to learn a bit more about the flora of the region.
N.b. We did not need bug repellent until we got the stretch of the path that runs next to the mangroves.

this is a great place to visit and walk the various exhibits that they have. it is very well taken care of and the staff is very friendly. I'd suggest having a guide (Gillsbioexperience) as the signage is limited and you'll miss a lot without one.

We visited in october 2023, during rainy season.
Very interesting walk in the jungle, then to the mangoves. Many, many mosquitos!!! You must wear clothing that covers you well; long pants, long shirt, socks and shoes. You must bring insect repellent and spray yourself almost constantly.
The view from top of look out is amazing, also has a breeze and gives you a break from the mosquitos.
Unfortunately, only by the mangove look out, you are in silence. Walking through the garden, you can hear the traffic from highway.

I really thought there would be more wildlife. There were a couple birds, 3 Mexican raccoons and 2 iguanas on a 90-min walk, that was it for wildlife. I was initially quoted 500 pesos entry for 4 adults. It seemed higher than what I had read about entry, but paid it. The lady at visitor center caught me before we left on hike and gave me 90 pesos back. The positive of it was there were very few other hikers, but I have to say I have seen more wildlife at place on ocean. It was “just okay” and I wouldn’t do again.

Mmmm. Maybe we went in the off season or the wrong time of day. There was nobody there, and we paid- in our opinion- way too much to walk 1.5 ish miles through the muggy mosquito mud paths. Everything was very run down, and I wouldn't necessarily call it a "botanical garden" it was more equivalent to a nature walk. To those who are not arborists it was not a great way to spend an hour.

I stopped here solo traveling in Quintana Roo. The the hike is 2km in length and can be done in under 2 hours even if you stop for lengthy amounts of time. I camped out birds for 10 minutes at a time and still finished in about 2 hours.
The day was oppressively hot which I think contributed to the lack of wildlife. I saw iguanas, very few birds (less than 10 total, which stuck out), and no monkeys.
Bring insect repellent, it is the jungle after all.

Nice quiet hike and we got to see two monkeys, one with a baby on board, so cute. Just ran into a few others there that morning. The bridge was closed definitely looked like it needed repairs. There was a metal lookout you could climb

I really love this place. I wasn’t expecting a place as big as this is. Is a very enjoyable experience if you love the flora. I liked the representation of the little mayan house.
Dalia is GREAT explaining everything about the native species of palms, flowers, plants and medical uses of them. The only problem that I had it was that nobody told me to bring a bugs repelent, and all the mosquitos were bitting me, and that’s why I had to leave. But, I hope to go back once again soon.

Went 2 days ago. Saw spider monkeys (6 during the walk) and iguanas and enjoyed wandering around for 1-2 hours..but sadly we found the swing bridge closed for repairs which was a shame. The small metal tower is still open however, so you can climb there to look out across the mangroves to Puerto Moralos instead.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent here while on vacation nearby recently. I spent a few hours taking my time walking through the entire loop, stopping to take photos and look at the various plants and wildlife! I would have liked to have seen monkeys but everything else was fantastic and I am not disappointed at all. I would highly reccomend visiting Jardin Botanico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin! :)

It is not within walking distance from the beach. You must take a cab from your resort. It cost us 350 pesos. There is an entrance fee, however I only paid 50 pesos as a Mexican senior. Warning; mosquitos are terrible, bring bug spray and wear protective clothes.

not too far, I was staying in Playa de Carmen and had a hire car. The drive was about 1/2 hr and the entrance to the gardens are (literally) on the slip road off to Puerto Morelos 120 pesos to go in and take anti mosquito clothes and or spray at this time of year.

Hola, es muy económico, está como en 80 pesos por persona. Si vas aprovecha para comprar jarabe para la tos natural, esta hecho a base de miel pura.

Some of the main species of interest are labelled especially on the trees not so much on the herbaceous plants. It's not like a botanic gardens in Europe but well worth a visit.

Hi! I am planning a visit to Mexico February 3 to 10 2015. My wife, son and I will be staying at Grand Sirenis near Akumal. I am a birdwatcher and I have visited the Yucatan several times. I have a few questions concerning the Botanical Gardens that I am hoping you might be able to answer:
1) the entrance seems hard to find, according to information on the Internet. Is it on the main highway between Akumal and Playa del Carmen (#307)?
2) should I take a taxi? Collectivo/ It appears to be about an hour from Akumal but Google Maps isn't actually finding the Botanical Gardens for me.
3) what is the best time of day, and how long should I allow for a visit?
4) how safe/kid-friendly is this place? I have read about a lot of mosquitoes...
5) do you have any information on the birds that are likely to be seen at the Botanical Gardens?
Many thanks;
John

It is a considerable distance from Akamal to the Gardens and would be quite expensive in a taxi. Hiring a car for a few days may afford some flexibility to visit other sights as well. It is true that the entrance is a little difficult to find. Leaving the highway to Puerto Morelos, drive slowly for a couple of hundred yard where you will find a small gated entrance. Bird life was almost non existent when I visited mid morning. Wear robust shoes, plenty of water and be smothered in insect repellant, we were bitten extensively as they swarm together. Hope this helps.
