Awesome. Every time. Toured the route for the 5th or 6th time and everytime: wow! One of my favourite routes in the world.

Probably the best part of the beautiful coastal highway. Would always recommend staying a night in Big Sur too.

This is an excellent drive on the old Coast Road. But Be preferred for hilly bumpy narrow sections. It is unpaved and some of the road has big ditches in it due to water washout. It is mostly through the forest of dense big trees. We thoroughly enjoyed it but just be warned it is not an easy ride.

This was SO worth finding the entrance (across from Bixby Creek Bridge) and the slow drive on a dirt road! We chose to drive from San Francisco to LA on the PCH for the views. This drive allows you to see things you'd miss if that's all you did. You also get a unique view of the Bixby Creek Bridge.

We went on a Monday and we encountered NO other cars on our journey. It has been very dry, so that wasn't an issue at all. I'm very glad about that because there are places that are very, very narrow.
My mom took all the pictures while I drove. She'd gasp at a view and I'd stop so she could snap a picture from inside the car out the window. I really tried to respect the the locals since we were essentially driving through private property. There are several points where someone could just close a gate and not allow us through. I'm sure they don't read these reviews, but if they do, I hope you know how grateful I am that you allow us to travel this hidden gem! THANK YOU!

Tips: Please use a vehicle with a high clearance. My Honda Civic would have bottomed out several times. Fortunately, I rented one of those Nissan Rogue that did just fine. I did put it into 4WD just to ensure I didn't get stuck anywhere.

I hesitate in recommending this drive though. If you are thoughtless, stupid, or unaware of the feelings, thoughts, and wishes of others, please don't do this drive. Don't leave your car, picnic, start a fire, wander, loiter, or trespass.
If, however, you are thoughtful, aware, and conscientious, please take the time to do this lovely 17 mile drive with some of the best vistas in California.

Someone, I'm sure a local, had put nails and screws in the road. We ended up getting two flat tires and had to drive slowly on the flats the last few miles to highway 1 which took FOREVER and wait for AAA. Awful experience.

This enchanting road takes you thru the beautiful stretches of the huge tree lined road which come continually . The sun dappled road with the lined up trees are a sight to behold . There are no eateries on the stretch .

This road is well maintained, goes through redwoods, oaks, grassy plateaus and beautiful trees, and is lined with unihabited but fenced off private property for the bulk of it. Lots of the reviews tell you that you need high clearance, but this could easily be navigated in a Subaru. I'm hestitate to say this, because I loved the fact that this road was secluded and that we only saw one other vehicle the entire route, but this road is a must do. We drove HWY 1 from Big Sur state park to Carmel-by-the-Sea for the day and then came back and took Coast Road from Bixby Bridge to Andrew Molera State Park and it was one of the greatest decisions we made. We even saw deer, birds, had a small heard of cattle to navigate and some amazing views. Such a fun time.

Travelled the old coast road in a pick up truck....awesome views and journey. You need decent ground clearance, it can get narrow with limited passing places and we did get stuck for a short time when the back end slid into a ditch while passing another vehicle but luckily we pulled out. It's not a place to breakdown with limited mobile signal but the experience was worth every second. We passed two vehicles and one walker in 11 miles.

The wife and I took a trip to Big Sur this past weekend. We took our new truck, just so we could go down the old coast road. We had been to Big Sur before, but going down this road really showed us more of Big Sur than we had in the past. The road was in pretty good condition. I used my off-road display on my truck that shows degrees of climb, as well as degrees the truck leans from side to side. The steeps part of the road was only 9 to 10 degrees up hill and only 4 to 5 degrees from side to side. I never had to use 4wd. This road is a must if you want to see great views and really enjoy the woods
