My wife and I bought captain, which we had never had. A great white, mild, flaky fish that we grilled. The helper at the market cleaned and filet the fish for us.

My family just visited Vieques. We spent an entire week exploring the island. I had heard that the local fish market was a cool place to visit. We had high hopes but were severely disappointed. We went on a weekday at 11 am as suggested. There were no fish to see. Only two lobsters and a bucket full of conch meat. We took a photo of the 7-8 Tarpon who wait in the shallow water by the fisherman's pier. We asked when they throw food out for them as I had read about. The pescaderia owner said in Spanish, "No guts today". He offered us one of the two lobsters at $8/lb. We took a photo but declined to purchase it. He offered conch meat and we smiled but also declined politely. Then he got irritated and gestured that we leave. So we did. You can't park within a quarter mile of this place and it is very hot in Vieques by 11 am. Don't waste your time! Go enjoy the fishermans platter at Bananas Restaurant in Esperanza. I had an incredible fresh fish meal for under $18 that included 3 kinds of local fresh caught fish AND shrimp and sides too. Good luck…
