Spectacular but too commercial

The falls were spectacular but all the vendors detracted from the beauty. Children at entrance swarm around car to sell items.

Don’t bother and go to Roberto Barrios. Not only is it cheaper it’s just more scenic proper jungle. Not just a tourist establishment, and you can often have a whole waterfall to yourself. Unlike Azul which costs a lot and is greeting by constant haggling.

Agua Azul Cascades

We travelled by road from San Cristobal to Palenque - Agua Azul waterfalls were on the way so we stopped for a look. As a side, it was a welcome break as the road to Palenque was kilometres of relentless winding curves and over 80 speed humps which slowed you down to 5 kph. Anyway, the Cascades were excellent (but not spectacular), the water was a beautiful pale blue and the Falls were working overtime. There are a couple of places to swim - some at the lower end if the river and some more secluded spots up river near the top of the Cascades. There is a relatively long and steepish path/stairway that you walk, alongside the Falls, with some photo stop spots here and there. The path is heavily populated with vendor stalls selling a range of souvenirs, t-shirts, carvings, tapestries, drinks, food and fossils (shells and meteorites from the area). The area has a jungle climate - humid and hot.

Brown but Beautiful

We arranged a day trip to Zona Arqueologica de Palenque and Casacadas de Agua Azul via our hotel for 750 pesos each from Palenque. (for two people)

We were picked up by a minibus at 09:00 AM from out hotel and had around 2 and half hours at the ruins. It then took about an hour or so to reach Cascadas de Agua Azul from the ruins. Unfortunately Cascadas de Misol-Ha was closed (we think there was filming there for a movie), so our trip did not include a stop there. As a result, we had a lot of time at Agua Azul.

It had been raining, so the water was more brown, but it is still very impressive.

If you work your way up the rapids, you can find points for photos and where you can swim. There are "life guards" (locals in life jackets) who can show you safe spaces to swim in around the rapids. We found a point where you could bathe near the rapids and lie on a rock under one of the rapids, so it was like a power shower. Other travellers found flatter areas where you could run along the rapids etc., so definitely explore further up.

Definitely recommend as part of a day trip from Palenque. (We think it is possible to visit as part of a transfer from San Cristóbal de las Casas also, weather permitting.)

Between San Christobal and Palenque - worth seeing

You drive down through the Chiapas highlands past coffee and banana plantations in particular into jungle areas. The waterfalls dont look that impessive until you follow the trail higher and higher ( quite hard work ). There are local people selling food, drinks and sovenirs all along the route so be prepared. Bathing area at top of trail but not really worth the effort of getting there since changing facilities are further down the mountain

Unsafe villages and roads not worth the views of the waterfalls

The road from Palenque to the Azul waterfalls is filled with corrupted locals. We experienced two things:
1) The locals chopped down 3 trees on the road which caused a traffic jam of 1 hour. In the meanwhile they cleared 1 side of the road and start collecting fees to pass over the open part of the road. The entire village participates in the spectacle. In our case they dared to ask for 200 pesos. We are a couple of 1 woman and 1 men and felt very unsafe there between all the villagers with machetes.
2) The more known case of children and adults holding ropes over the road trying to make you stop. We read all the tips to not stop and slowly kept on driving. The locals are apparently used to this by now and threw a stick to the car which dented it.

The waterfalls itself are not worth all this hassle. My advice is to stay very far away from this part of Mexico.

Beautiful but commercial

We visited this waterfall as part of a day trip from San cristobal to Palenque. Given its location about 60km south of palenque on the somewhat dangerous highway 199 one must take some time to consider the logistics of getting here. The day trips which incorporate Agua Azul, Misol-Ha and the Palenque archeological site (as well as serving as your transport between San cristobal and palenque) to me made the most sense.

It was 50 mexican peso for entry but this was covered by our tour.

The site was quite stunning with numerous waterfalls and turquoise pools. I can confirm the water is still turquoise despite being the rainy reason (1/8/2022), although it did murky up a bit at the top end.

There is a path which runs about a kilometre upstream from the parking lot which you can walk up. The best waterfalls are located at the start of the track though.

You can swim here but due to previous drownings you are asked to only swim in designated areas. I found the water a little too cool for swimming.

Change rooms and toilets were provided for a cost of 5 peso.

There is a absolute plethora of restaurants and souvenir stores. They basically line the kilometre or so of track and the vendors can be quite pushy. This subtracted from its naturally beauty somewhat. What was most annoying was that they were all selling the exact same souvenirs.

Overall worth a visit as a part of a larger tour of this area but do take some time to consider your safety (I note a few horror stories on this thread).

Stunning!

At first I was worried the water would be green or brown because July is rain season but no! The color is beautifully blue just as the waterfalls name. You are allowed to swim in it, in the areas that is safe! There are food and souvenir shops, and bathrooms, all around the place, they are not great but they do the job! I hope I get to come back someday!

Note: I went with my partner, we are an LGBTQ+ couple, we hold hands and received some dirty looks but besides that, it was okay!

CASCADAS DE AGUA AZUL

My experience in this place was wonderful, the waterfalls are impressive, I really liked its nature, its flora and fauna, I also loved the color of the water and the kilometers of rivers and waterfalls that are formed. I made this trip with my family and they also liked it very much, the people are very friendly and there were many tourists visiting the place. The entrance to the waterfalls was very accessible, there were also very good restaurants with a great gastronomy and we also liked the different handicrafts that they sold made by themselves. I highly recommend this place for its beautiful places.

This is one of the wonders of natural world. We were lucky to visit this in April when water was beautiful azur coulor. Absolutely spectacular! Many places to swim, eat and buy souvenirs
