This was definitely one of the highlights of our break, especially as we knew nothing about it beforehand. It's a chapel and a museum dedicated to the patron saint of cyclists. It's heavily road race influenced, both the chapel and museum house some stunning bicycles and related artefacts. The chapel is impressive enough, but I really didn't know where to look next in the museum, such was the quality of the displays. If you're anywhere near here and have even a passing interest in cycling, DO NOT MISS THIS!!

Whether you've a passion for cycling, an addiction for Italian cycling heroes or you're simply passing through, STOP and go take a look inside the chapel and the nearby museum. The intimacy with the cycling history presented in the chapel is very special. And if you're very lucky, you might meet Mario, the current curator, who might just show you some of his providence not on general display. Read the longer summaries in the following URLs.

This was less of a visit and more of a pilgrimage. After having read about this place for years, it was wonderful to see in person. The chapel and grounds are beautiful, and the pieces of cycling history inside are second to none. A great, great experience.

A small church with different memories of cyclists. The best way to visit it is riding a bicycle, maybe from Bellagio or Erba. The route is quite steep, but the sanctuary is also a balcony to enjoy the mountain landscape. If you stop there in the morning, you can decide to complete your bicycle trip at the "Colma di Sormano" or through the regional road or through the "Wall" a 2 km narrow street - forbidden for cars - where you can taste a 25% pendence.

If you have any interest in cycling don't miss this beautiful chapel. It is full of cycling memorabilia including bikes and jerseys from some of cycling's greats. As Aussies we were particularly thrilled to see the World Champion and Tour De France Yellow Jerseys of Cadel Evans. The nearby statue is wonderful, as are the views. Sadly the cycling museum is only opening on weekends now so best timed to do both, the C36 bus goes up from Bellagio and us a worthwhile event in its own right on the hairpins and we actually walked back - roughly 12km but the views were sensational.

Visited here twice during our month in Bellagio. Impressed beyond merely WOW !!! If you feel for he pain and agony of the riders of the Tour de France, if you are amazed at the bikers on the back roads and steep hill climbs of northern Italy, then you must stop here and see history. You cannot really understand Italian fascination with biking unless you spend a few minutes staring at the walls crowded with relics of biking lore ... Simply wonderful.

First confession - I didn’t want to go here. Second confession- my husband’s family are obsessed with cycling. Right, that said half the party didn’t know anything about cycling and still enjoyed it immensely. The museum is a fascinating collection of bikes and photos about Italian cycling. I thought we’d be in the museum for about 40 minutes but a good 90 minutes later and my family were still pointing out interesting things to each other. So your average family might get an hour out of it. We went on to the church next door and spent another 15 minutes recognising great cyclists and recalling their triumphs.
The view is spectacular, and there is a good cafe just near the bus stop. Other than that there’s not much up there - but the bus journey from Bellagio is fabulous!! The views are great and it was fun listening to all the chatter on the bus. The road is a twisty, winding, narrow thing that demonstrates the driver’s skill. Loved it. We stopped off at Lecco on the way back as we’d seen the market on, but it had finished. Only one small cafe on the main road. We had a super little snack lunch there with great pizzas from their oven fired up especially for us. Worth a stop but check the time first otherwise not much going on.

My wife indulged me and accompanied me on a pilgrimage to this holy site of bicycling. Literally. In 1945 the Pope proclaimed The Madonna di Ghisallo as the Paton saint of cyclists. The climb itself is not long, but the 14-15% sections will get your attention. The museum was far beyond my expectations. I mean, they have Three Eddie Merckx jerseys from 1) yellow, Le Tour, 2) Pink, Giro and 3) classic Molteni team jersey. They have Lance's World Championship jersey from 1993, when he won before he joined the rest of the dopers. And so many classic, historically important bikes. Maria told her friends that I was like a 5 year old in a toy store, and she may have understated it!

Was in Bellagio for couples trip. I rented a bike and rode up. Should have spent more time there but was restless to get on up road on my bike to do a climb called Muro di Sormano (spelling?).
If you are in area and a serious cyclist- American or European- this is a must see. The climb up from Bellagio was a treat also. Climbing and switchbacks for your riding pleasure!

The breathtaking view you can enjoy from Madonna del Ghisallo is one of the reasons that 10 years ago convinced me to buy an house in this area and two years ago to open my house to guests coming from all other the world. If you spend some days in this area and give a look to the lake from the balcony of Madonna del Ghisallo, you can understand why I decided to move here! Madonna del Ghisallo is a magic place, a must if you visit Como Area but don't make the mistake to pay a fast visit because this area suspended between the sky and the lake is really magic and plenty of activities to do and nice places to visit. I recommend Madonna del Ghisallo to everybody because when you are there.... you live an experience you sure will remember forever!

Is it possible to hike the way to the chapel or is it mainly the bikes and buses?
Thank you!
Written October 5, 2015
We didn't notice any hiking trails (not that we were specifically looking out for them) nor signposts pointing to trails. The road up is narrow, and I would think a dangerous undertaking to try to walk it. My suggestion would be the bus, or if you are keen on the exercise, hire a bike from the sports store in Bellagio - they have quite a bias to cycling gear.

we are in Bellagio in June, are there buses to the church? we won,t have our own transport. thanks
Written September 26, 2015
hi,we arrived there by car ,but I saw a bus on which was written that does round trips from Bellagio to Ghisallo or Magreglio-the little town which includes Ghisallo
Written September 27, 2015
How do I get there by public transport
Written August 25, 2015
Thanks for the replies. We caught the public bus (C36, I think) from near the Hotel IL Perlo Panorama, near the outskirts of Bellagio, which was close to where we stayed. The museum was terrific and church very interesting, stuffed full of cycling related items. We spent a couple of hours there, waiting for the bus back to Bellagio. But the weather was lovely for sitting around and watching the cyclists come and go. We bought our ticket on the bus - around 3 euros each.

What are the hours of the museum for October 2015?
Written March 2, 2015
Hard to say - they have a website underconstruction that would be worth keeping a check on if you search museo del ghisallo Otherwise, all I can say it was closed on a Saturday and Sunday in August 2014, but as far as I remember was open every other day.
