Terrible. Our guide Vicki seemed overworked and burnt out. There was no signage to indicate arrival. Only one person working which meant our ride left over 15 minutes late (but returned right on time). We've done many rides similar and they welcome and orient the guests to safety and the experience 4D quarterhorses (formerly Dahana) did a very minimal job of this and a poor one at that. Vicki literally read off the "warnings" sounding like a robot. The views were pleasant and the experience could have been a good one. I called the owners to try and provide some gentle kind feedback, but they never responded.

My daughter (25) and I (57) loved our horseback riding experience at Dahana Ranch. I highly, highly recommend it. You were riding in open fields, seeing beautiful scenery, and it was magical. The group included some beginners (and even young kids) and some with more experience - each could ride separately and there wasn't any "nose to tail" riding at all. Only issue we found was that they are a bit understaffed due to Covid (as many places are) - so it took a little while for them to call me back to me to book a spot (you might try texting for a reservation instead). Well worth it though.

We came across this place in web search when all of the places we had brochures for were booked and I'm glad we did. It was by far the best riding stable we have been to. No nose to tail trail riding here. You ride through the hills and valleys of a working cattle ranch. The guide would basically point out a landmark and say that's where we are headed. You were then free to spread out and get there any way you wanted as long as the guide could see you. The horses were very well trained and because they use them to work the ranch and they weren't used to following the same trail, you could actually steer them where you wanted to go. The mountainous views while riding were amazing and it was easy to forget you were in Hawaii and not out west somewhere. The staff was also great. I highly recommend.

Great trail ride for a family of 4 including 2 young kids (3 and 5). We signed up for a private ride so the kids could ride their own horses, and it worked out great with the guide leading their horses on her own horse.

The horses were great and we learned a lot about life on the Big Island during the ride.

The only thing worth noting is that the location has moved versus what’s described in most of the reviews. They moved from Waimea to Waikoloa Village, so the ride is on a pretty straightforward trail (with some rolling hills) behind the village, but it’s not a wide-open meadow as described in some of the earlier reviews where you can just wander around.

It’s still pretty - you have a good view of 4 of the 5 volcanos and we saw wild goats and donkeys, but it’s not big, green rolling pastures.

Definitely recommend if that’s what you’re looking for!

My partner and I enjoyed a gorgeous horseback ride with this ranch through sunny and scenic Waimea. Our guide was very experienced and attentive, and helped everyone navigate their horse comfortably. We spent two hours enjoying a scenic ride with views of ocean, nearby Mauna Kea, and the rolling ranch hills. Highly recommend this ranch!

Very nice ride trough open cattle pasture. The guide encourages you not to ride “nose to tail “ as has been mentioned. Gentle, cared for, well trained horses. Appropriate for different ages and levels of experience. Generous weight limit for riders, far greater than most island stables. Good sized quarter horses. Two hour rides available.

I’d love to say I had a great ride and visit to the ranch, but sadly I was never able to book a ride—I asked numerous times if I could be added to a group (was traveling solo) since they won’t book individuals. I was told “we’ll let you know” and was even offered a spot on a different ride but there was no follow up contact. I love riding and the big island uplands but am not going to beg for a reservation. Maybe next time.

This wasn't on our agenda when we arrived on the big island, but we're so glad that we found 4D Quarter Horses. We had the most beautiful, relaxing ride through the grazing hills. We lucked out in that it was just the 3 of us on the tour. We could not have been more satisfied. It's about an hour from Hilo and about 25 minutes from Waimea. Totally worth it.

I went to the ranch with a very happy mood however ended up encountering a snobbish and rude ranch guy (he claimed that he is one of the son who went to school earlier on and just came back to the ranch).

He had very rude attitude towards paying customers and spoke things such as "he's pissed off", etc.

I wouldn't recommend this ranch,... as there are many others on the big island

This gentleman would not listen to the guide upon check in. He was very rude and kept calling him "Dude". He was asked very politely 3x to please stand in a certain area( not directly in front of the horses ) before being loaded on his horse. His response was "dude I will do it when I'm ready". So after the third time, my son did respond with "now you are started to get me pissed off". Yes, he is my son. Yes, I am the owner. Please try and understand that the rules are there for the safety of the guests and customers are expected to follow our directions.

Imagine a beautiful Hawaiian ranch, rolling green hills, the scent of the ocean in the air. Now imagine a four year old girl screaming, and two six year old girls crying, because after an hour' and a half drive up the coast, they find out that the ride had been cancelled. Hawaiian vacation morning, ruined. "We tried to call your hotel," was the excuse. Did you think of calling my cell phone, I asked. Apparently not. And why was our ride canceled, we asked, as we watched a party of similar size being saddled up. "Some of our horses turned up lame this morning." Hmmm. Well, how about taking just a few of us out? "No we can't do that.": So I guess all seven horses suddenly became unridable (though we could see them, and they looked fine to me.) Who knows the real reason. To top it off,, they were rude. Lame, indeed.
