The gardens are large and very inviting, allowing for the weather, for a picnic. If one only does one castle visit in NL then pick this oneVisited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten October 30, 2023
- Lenny HAuckland, New Zealand984 contributionsStunningWhat a spectacular example of a restoration project. Amazing! It is by far not the oldest castle you can visit, but it is so worth a visit - even on a miserable day. Lots of well-informed volunteer guides are stationed throughout. The gardens are beautiful, including in the middle of winter.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten February 14, 2024
- Clasina29Amsterdam, The Netherlands231 contributionsRebuild castle with gardens.Beautiful place to go. Rain or shine. No expense was spared when this castle was reconstructed. The details are wonderful. We took the 16:00 tour, if you can go earlier do so, we felt a bit rushed with going through the castle. There is so much to see, it’s nice to not have to rush before the castle closes at 17:00. Gardens/park are also worth the visit. There is a maze at the rear of the garden. When the beechwood are full in their leaves it is a challenge to fine the swan.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten April 15, 2024
- Debbie VBovenkarspel, The Netherlands109 contributionsBeautiful restored castleFar exceeded our expectations. Beautiful grounds and an interesting restoration of the castle showcasing just what money can buy. The volunteers in each of the rooms were keen to share their knowledge and wit (In several languages) The only slight downside was the booking process. Having only decided to visit that day I went online to book tickets but there were no time slots available for the castle. I then telephoned to ask about availability on the door but was told that there was nothing available. I then booked tickets just for the grounds but on arrival found that I could purchase tickets for the castle contrary to what the lady on the phone had advised. Would loved to have had a drink and a bite to eat but both of the cafes were full to bursting.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten May 27, 2024
- Ariyya601 contributionsExtravagant castleThis castle is quite interesting as an example of what is possible when the owner has a lot of time and money on their hands. The architecture and furnishings are exquisite to the point that your eyes will blur and you don't know what to look at. The gardens are beautiful too especially during spring season. I'd just warn that people who are claustrophobic might find the narrow stairs and basement area hard to visit as it's a small enclosed space made of solid stone.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten July 4, 2024
- AnonymousThe Netherlands71 contributionsEducational castle visit indoors and outdoors in the heart of Holland! This castle has very nice options to tour the gardens and the castle itself. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and can tell you about the role in history and significance this castle and its owners played in shaping Dutch society and surrounding area. Great place to have an indoor and outdoor experience. You are able to also visit the beautiful city of Haarzuilens nearby.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten July 30, 2024

In each room is a special guide who are all very kind and can tell you everything you want to know about the room or the castle if you like. Would very much recommend going here! Well worth the price and the time.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten August 27, 2024

We travelled from Amsterdam to De Haar and it was really easy. The bus 111 takes you right outside so using public transportation is perfectly fine. We have museum cards so booked our tickets online and went and fetched at reception.
We started the visit off with coffee and a sandwich at the Koetshuis. Really delicious and great service.
Thereafter we went in to the castle grounds. This was around 10.30am and it was pretty empty still so we were able to get lovely photos. We did the 11am castle tour. It was great and not too long.
We spent more time exploring the gardens before taking bus 111 back to Vleuten.

Avoid this place if you have young children or a disabled person with you. The castle is completely inaccessible for anyone who cannot go up and down very steep and narrow stair cases.
Also the staff in the castle are awful. My three year old was tired going up and down the stairs and found them quite difficult. He got upset when we found yet another set of stairs and he started crying. We were trying to get him to calm down and yet within a minute a very unhelpful old man who worked in the main hall of the castle came over and told me to move him (he was sat on the floor crying) as people were trying to walk around. The hall had maybe ten people in it and there was plenty of space. My son wasn’t lying down. Just sitting and crying.
The man came back within 30seconds and tried giving me parenting advice “you need to show him you’re the boss, or are you not the boss in your family?” I get that he comes from a generation when parents hated their kids and kids hated their parents but it’s not his place to give me parenting advice.
Then an equally unpleasant old woman came over to “help” by telling me “he needs to stop crying. You are guests in this house and he needs to be quiet or leave” seeing as we had paid to enter a castle I thought that treating it like a silent research library and being rude to people who paid to visit. So we left.

We were skeptical about going because we realized the night before how tricky the commute would be from Amsterdam to the castle. We ended up taking the car which was the best and quickest option, and I must admit we had no regrets when we got there. The castle and the castle grounds are stunning and there is so much history behind it! For the price you pay it's good value because you can spend as much time as you want there, plus take a tour of the castle. If the weather is nice, I recommend bringing a blanket and some snacks to have a picnic.

Travel guides describe this castle with scorn as a millionaire´s whim, with no history or style. And yes, it´s the perfect picture of opulence and squander, but makes beautiful photos. The stoy told in each room seems like jet set gossip, but is still captivating.
The rooms on display are limited, and the route is organized in a one way sense that takes you from one room to the next.
Leave enough time to wander in the gardens and take many pictures; the castle looks different from each angle.
Buy your tickets online, to choose the schedule that better suits you. Even though there is a ticket booth, they ask you to use the web site.
There is a restaurant in what seems to be old stables or garage, but their schedule is limited. At 5:00pm we could only eat chicken nuggets, which were unexpectedly delicious.
Arriving to the castle can be tricky. Most visitors did it in their own cars; there´s a large parking lot. We took an app cab from Schipol and had a hard time finding a way back, until a local taxi arrived to pick up some customers and we asked him to call a colleague (a very expensive ride).

This an interesting modern castle that was once a family residence, donated by the family to be a museum. Therefore the interiors themselves contain a mix of medieval & mostly modern (circa 1900's onward) fixtures and installations.
If you're looking for mostly medieval stuff, best to give this a pass. However, if you like architecture, castles in general, and would like to have a look at how the nobility lived, this would be interesting for you.
This castle also is not that interesting for kids - not much to do for them apart from looking at the interiors.
The exterior grounds, however, are nice and scenic. There are many picnic spots available, you could marvel at the gardens, look at some of the animals (although not many). I would say the exteriors of the castle are more interesting than what's inside!

Awesome place. Beautiful castle and garden. Feedback for improvement: doesn't accept cash payments, rather slow process to purchase tickets at the entry. Friendly ladies inside the castle greeted you and provided explanation about the rooms in the castle. The cafe closed quote early. Would be nicer the cafe stays open longer so visitors after seeing the castle and garden have time to buy refreshments. Can improve on the friendliness of the service team at the café. Rather expensive for entry tickets and parking.

The castle is very beautiful. You can easily combine it with a visit to Utrecht. However, I was impressed by the expensive entrance prices so this is why I take out one star. The entrance costs over 18 euro. Just for the park (without castle) it is 7 euro plus 6 euro for parking. I guess we are very spoilt in Germany where usually the parks of castles are free and to enter a castle we usually pay 10 euro. There should also be a better bus connection from Utrecht. You have to take a train to Vloten and then a bus. It is running only once an hour it seems. But beautiful gardens. But I did not check the castle inside due to the entrance price.

It's terribly sad that only the pictures of the gardens when they are blooming are published. In winter everything is dead and the beauty of the gardens is not visible. I was at different times in the castle De Haar with clients. I would like to point out that the prices are very expensive 19 euros to visit the castle and if you want to visit only the gardens the cost is 8 euros. I would like to point out that during the winter the gardens are not inviting, the gardens in the winter should be free, they are far from being as beautiful as in the 4 months of flowering. It is not recommended to visit the castle during the period when the gardens are not in bloom, it is a waste of money..

Last month I celebrated my 60th birthday with a full program in and around Utrecht because I wanted to go to castle de Haar with my wife.
So we planned everything around that.
At just before 11:00 we arrived, had a cup of coffee, bought tickets ‘entry to the park’ and headed towards the castle. Once there, the turnstiles didn't open? Lady knew to tell us that we could not access the castle because we had bought wrong tickets (for park..) It sucked but well walked that whole part back and we arrived at the information desk about 11:15. We told our story to a lady who then informed us in a very pedantic way that we could not enter the castle again until 13.30 because a large group would go in at 11:30...🤷♂️
(If our ticket had been exchanged immediately we would have been 11:25 in the castle..)
To which I indicated that this was not possible due to busy birthday program. Then we were once again addressed by this failed school teacher pedantic. We only left because otherwise we would become unkind.
So no castle de Haar for us, wasting money, but I don't even care that much. Just the arrogance bah.
The worst thing I think is the way we were spoken to. This empathetic arrogant .... lady thinks she is doing her job exemplary but absolutely does not realize how terribly bad she appears to others. Misrepresentation it is. A shame about such a beautiful Attraction.

DO NOT book this unless you have a private car or book a package with transportation. We read the information and chose to go by taxi or Bolt from Utrecht which was supposed to cost about €25-30 each way. When we got to Utrecht no car would accept the fare and it was too late to use public transport. We didn’t ever get to castle. We immediately contacted the booking service - GetYourGuide - who was “very sorry” but couldn’t give a refund. At the time we booked we didn’t see any packages with transportation included. Do not buy the castle tickets alone!

Can you walk the grounds and not go in the castle? If so, do you just pay parking?
Written January 1, 2020
You can walk for free up to the main entrance (and stables) where you buy the tickets, but if you want to go to the castle itself or walk around the castle gardens (or both), then you need to buy tickets for that. There’s also a combi ticket if you like.
If you go by car, you pay for parking.
It might be handy to buy an annual museum card if you plan to go to multiple museums during the year. You can buy the museum card at the entrance of museums and you have a month to activate it with a Dutch address and a photo, but you can still use it as soon as you buy it without registering it to you. So for tourists, you can use it for a month and after that, you need to register it as above if you like. If you never register it (with an address or picture) then I believe it will expire after a month or after a certain period)- the exact terms can be found on the museum card website.
But it could still be worth it, if you plan to visit multiple museums within a short period. There’s a list of participating museums also on the museum card website.

This place is possible to get to via public transport, however, it would not be an easy trip and would probably take too long to be worthwhile. Depending on your starting point, it would be trains and buses or just buses. If you are seriously thinking about visiting I would suggest you take a train to the nearest stop and then take an UBER.

The Kasteel is not really close to any rail stations that we saw. If you are a bike person try the suggestion about renting a bike. There may be a bus stop somewhat closer. I would recommend UBER. Train, Tram, Bike, Uber, drive in that order.
