Melba's Chocolate Factory is a 'working' tourism factory located in a heritage listed complex 40 minutes from Adelaide at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills. From 1919 the South Australian Farmers Cooperative Union made the site famous by producing cheese, butter, margarine and small goods, which were recognised worldwide. This activity ceased in 1976. From that year, the buildings lay abandoned until 1990 when the current proprietors and directors, Joy and Graeme Foristal arrived. With 1940's era chocolate and confectionery making equipment, they began their dream making old Australian favourite chocolate and confectionery. The complex developed from there and is now known as 'Heritage Park' and has become home to other cottage industries. Visitors today find the old cheese factory transformed into a large emporium styled confectionery factory shop. This is a centerpiece for 5 different rooms, where various manufacturing processes can be viewed. These are the Chocolate Room, Depositing Room, Packing Room, Panning Room and Toffee Room. Visitors are encouraged to speak to the staff who have mastered the use of the heritage equipment, making old fashioned favourites in the time honoured tradition. Old favourites such as, Inch Licorice Block, Traffic Lights and Rocky Road. To tempt chocolate lovers, there is the constant aroma of chocolate and confectionery being made.....yum! An additional interesting feature is the collection of antique and quaint memorabilia from times past, which can be found on display around the factory walls. All in all, this package makes the factory a popular family attraction as well as a significant Hill's destination for families, groups, charters and interstate, national and international visitors.

Don't arrive too early

Good choice of chocolate for all tastes, if you arrive too early be prepared that no samples will be available. But give them time and samples will be in the baskets for you to try

My hubby loves this place with memories of his childhood. Great chocolates, licorice and now reduce sugar chocolate as well. Well worth a visit.

Stopped here to buy xmas presents. Lucky that's all I was after. While the chocolate is nice and gifts are well presented, there is nothing else to see or do in here.

Hi MeanderingMoose14, Thanks for taking the time to get in touch with us. We value all feedback and appreciate your comments. Over the Christmas period, we ensured that production was a key priority, along with impromptu product demonstrations. Also on offer for families was free face-painting and a colouring-in competition. Due to the schedule of our Twilight Trading, certain hours... More

We love heading to Melba's for a quick shop for confectionary goodies. It's always fun watching the goodies being made along with a taste test of course. Ample parking. Toilets available. They now have a cafe to sit and relax in. Coffee & Chocolate...mmmmm Love it.

I am a dairy-free person and hopes there would at least be a pure dark chocolate bark that would be completely dairy free. Unfortunately, this option wasn't available. There is a wide range of drop lollies though, but would have liked to have chocolate. My friend had the malt chocolate balls and loved it, so lucky for those who can... More

This place is packed to the gunnels with reasonably priced chocolate. A visual delight awaits you inside this massive building. Little rooms off to the sides of the main building give visitors a good view of the inner workings of the chocolate-making process. I loved the little samples left out in each doorway to try. Lovely staff. Great value, well... More

Great service. Best chocolates. Purchased the chocolate sultanas, yummo. My son loves the white raspberry bullets. Check out the prices because sometimes it is cheaper to purchase 3 small bags rather than 1 big bag.

Delicious chocolate, huge variety. We were lucky enough to view the manufacture of some of the products. Great South Australian business.
