A beautiful abbey with an adjoining monastic convent dating back to the 13th century, the complex is located in the municipal area of Fossacesia and dominates the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo, dotted with the characteristic trabocchi, from a beautiful position where the gaze can range for kilometers in a north and south direction.
Surrounded by a well-kept and lush garden, the basilica is characterized by the majestic portal of the Moon - also known as the portal of Men - supported by two columns which at their sides have two massive and rich marble doors depicting episodes from the life of the Prophets.
The interior, with three naves, appears simple and bare with the exposed wooden trussed ceiling and enlivened by the transept alone, raised from the main floor and connected to it via a wide staircase the width of the central nave.
As the title suggests, the visit was incomplete as a wedding was in progress at the time of the visit and it was not possible for me to visit (according to many) the most beautiful part of the basilica, the crypt characterized by a cobblestone floor and five frescoes, in different styles, dating back to an era ranging from the 12th to the 13th century, from the Byzantine to the Tuscan pictorial school.

The abbey stands on a promontory between the countryside and the sea of the Trabocchi coast, the location is stupendous and the history of this construction is more than a thousand years old. The current structure stands in a place where the temple of Venus was built in Roman times, of which today only a closed spring remains, to which for centuries a thaumaturgical power has been attributed. The history of the abbey begins in 540 when the pagan temple was demolished to build a first settlement. The monastic complex currently consists of a basilica and a monastery, both dating back to the beginning of the 13th century. The church has a Latin cross plan, and has three naves. The crypt is beautiful and evocative and consists of recovered columns, including two of Roman origins. The cloister is interesting, which extends over three sides. The exterior is impressive with its beautiful door and on the opposite side the curves of the apse.
It is a place of peace, which gives the visitor spiritual atmospheres, in a stupendous landscape setting. To be seen!

Ecclesial complex 💒 dated over the centuries, this location attracts multitudes of faithful, tourists and... spouses every year due to its architecture and its thousand-year history!
The large nave, in fact, with its rows of columns and arches lends itself very well to the celebration of weddings 🫶 and even during our visit there was one in progress....
For the rest, what can I say...: it's worth climbing up here also to enjoy an enviable 👀 view!!

Peace and serenity. This is the synthesis of this abbey built in the 5th century remains a pagan temple dedicated to Venus. Located on the hill overlooking the sea is definitely worth a visit ... open until 8 pm. Romanesque style for my canons..really beautiful.

Sited on a hill near Fossacesia, the wonderful abbey of Saint John in Venere is a holy site of art, peace and pray. The Passionist Friars hold now this olace and so you can hear the mass told by them. Despite the spiritual side, the abbey is a wonderful example of romanic and italian gothic style, that can be both visible is both the abbey and the crypt.
I do recommend to visit this special place!

A masterpiece of medieval architecture, situated on a hillside overlooking the Adriatic sea, at Fossacesia, Abruzzi.
The Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere and the adjacent monastery are placed on a promontory with nreathtaking views. They were originally built, in the VI century, on a pagan temple dedicated to Venus (Venere), the goddess of beauty. Beauty is exactly what comes to mind in this place!

Beautifully preserved, steeped in history, and a fine place to spend a few hours. It's located overlooking the sea and you can see the town of Vasto in the distance. A lot of weddings are held here due to the beautiful place, but also there's ample parking, and attentive staff. The original frescoes are wonderful and all the archways held me in awe.

Yes, this is another church but it's still a beautiful place to visit. You must visit the crypt with the beautiful frescoes. Simple architecture and beautiful carvings around the double front doors. There is also a cloister where you can walk quietly and imagine the monks enjoying the garden. Also you don't want to miss the amazing view of the Adriatic and a yummy gelato.
