Quiet park amidst a busy city

Mt St John is a short walk to the crater rim and then you can walk right around the crater rim and down into the crater if you want to. It's very peaceful and easy to access from a few different streets. Lovely walk away from hustle and bustle, or run around the crater rim and crater for a bit of a workout!

Whilst visiting Auckland we decided to go to the top of as many volcanic cones as we had time for ... and we started with Mount Saint John. It turned out to be the easiest climb we undertook; good paths, and wonderful views.

Hidden gem
Jun. 2018 • Couples
Have been here many times. Actually, I don't want to see this beautify little gem become too popular, as it is a peaceful refuge from the bustle of city life. Great views, idyllic picnic spot, and now not defiled by cattle. But the cattle and people have eroded what is an archaeological site, as well as site of great cultural significance, so please take care if you visit not to damage the natural and ancient features. They're not making pa sites anymore.

If your near by it worth doing it takes about 2-3 minutes to walk up and some of the views are nice. Don’t expect it to be breath taking though.

A run up Mt St John
Aug. 2017 • Solo
Mt St John is a great green hill here in Epsom.
It's off the tourist trail so you only get the occasional local having a walk or run and most times are just left to yourself.
It's pretty private as well as its ringed by houses except for the 4 access points.
The views here are spectacular and the tranquility and peace here is unusual as you are right next to the Newmarket and all the hustle and bustle that goes with it.

I took a pleasant walk up to the top of Mt St John Domain, talking in the sights and local history of the Maori culture & extinct volcano.

Great place to orientate yourself when first arriving in Auckland, interesting geology & landform ie extinct volcanoes. Panoramic views of city and seascapes.

Great views of Auckland city atop this volcanic domain
Nov. 2016 • Family
We discovered this walking trail by chance even though its quite established in this area. The trail leads up a steep path with steps to help one walk up the domain through a shady grove. Be aware it can be hard on the knees for those not used to it. Wear good shoes with good grip as it can be slippery when wet. At the top of the steps, the area opens up to the top of a dormant volcano with breathtaking views of Auckland city, the harbour and the neighbouring rooftops. Well worth the climb. Quite popular with the locals as we pass quite a few people from the neighbourhood including some who bring their dogs for walks.
