We organised my 7 year old's birthday party at the "ground floor restaurant- 57" in Jetwing Colombo 7 recently and were very very impressed with the quality of service and delivery. Everything was great- the food, cleanliness, the ability of the staff to handle special requests in the last minute, the ability of the staff to work with other vendors incl. those who brought the decor, other party furniture, cake etc. independently, their hospitality and thoughtfulness in dealing with kids and guests and much more. Highly recommend this venue for kids birthday parties. All my guests loved the party and many have already asked for the contact of the place to host their own parties here.

Kudos to the fearless leader Siva who deserves a special mention for his leadership, customer focus and action bias and to his full team- Arjuna, Nihan, Aravinth and all the crew of the Restaurant! Thank you so much team!

As a tour guide with extensive experience in showcasing Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage, the Munneswaram Temple in Chilaw is a destination I always recommend for those interested in spirituality, history, and architecture. This ancient temple complex, dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, is one of the country’s oldest Hindu temples and a significant pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Dating back over 1,000 years, Munneswaram Temple is believed to have been established during the time of the Chola dynasty. Legend has it that Lord Rama prayed here after his battle with Ravana, seeking to absolve himself of the sins of war, which makes it a crucial part of the Ramayana trail in Sri Lanka. For many tourists, learning about this connection between the Indian epic and Sri Lanka is both surprising and fascinating.

The temple complex houses five shrines, with the largest and most prominent being dedicated to Lord Shiva. The other shrines are devoted to gods such as Ganesha, Kali, and Ayyanar, offering visitors a deep insight into Hindu religious practices. The annual Munneswaram festival, which features elaborate processions, draws pilgrims and tourists from all over the country, and it's an excellent time for visitors to witness vibrant Hindu rituals.

On our way from a holiday in a Chilaw Hotel we stopped by there! As a child/teenager I have been there with my parent since then and after moved to Europe I never visited it! When I saw it 1st time after so many years, I couldn’t even recognize is this the place I seen during my childhood! Though it is not a very special or modified since then still something there are new, may be new buildings! But, my husband being an ethnic Dane for him it is something new!
One thing is for sure i.e. this Temple is very old temple!

Munneswaram is famous in India and other places due to the ancient Shiva temple, there is written records to prove it is there for more than 1000 years. According to Saiva epicts great poets (Nayanmar) Lord Shiva is very powerful, This is one of 5 Ishwara temples (Shiva)in the world in fact 4 out of 5 siva temples are in Sri Lanka (Thiru koneswaram at Trincomalee, Thiruketheecharam at mannar, naguleswaram at jaffna and this one) the other one is at Rameswaram at south India. The main God is known as Munnainathar and the Goddes is Sri Vadivambihai
This temple is situated little away from the town (about 3 KM) there are enough public transport to Chilaw and this temple.
Little behind of this temple there is a Kaali temple should not miss, this is very popular among all races in Sri Lanka. Till recent there are sacrifice of animals like Goat and hen but due to some issues it is halted now. It is very colour full temple if you come to Chilaw make it a point to visit here.
Both temple has no entry fees or donation, if you want you can donate. Dress code should be mind full no short skirt or shorts anything longer than knees for the ladies and trousers for the gents (it is not very strict some times you may feel uncomfortable)
Please note that you need not pay to any one including the people standing outside or the shops out there.

A very interesting temple in Chilaw, one of the three main Shiva temples is Sri Lanka. Wandering around and watching the ceremonies give you a glimpse into HIndu rituals. Worth the time to visit. Please dress properly, this is a holy place! we saw some tourists dressed with shorts and without sleeves, very shameful and it irritates the local people.

The temple is 3 kms from Chilaw bus stand. It is just on the Wariapola road. Very easy to access. There is lot of parking space too. Plenty of shops near by to buy pooja items. There is a painting of Sharabhewara Avataar of Lord Shiva in this temple which is a rarity. This is the avataar that Lord Shiva took to tame Narshimha Avataar of Vishnu whe Prahaladan could not pacify him after slaying Hiranyakasipu.
This temple is in existing from the Ramayana days. It is believed that Brahmahasti Dosham was following Rama's chariot after the slaying of Ravana and Rama was passing over this spot it disappeared. So Rama landed here and prayed to Lord Shiva.
Do not miss out on going to Manawari temple which is about 10 - 15 kms from Chilaw on the Puttalam road.
There is the idol of Lingam which was made by Ramar using mud. It is still existing. Visit Manawari temple first and then come here since this temple is open up to 1 pm.

Even if you just have time to pass this temple - do at least go to the little cafe next to it for the best vadai and thosai - fabulous and fresh! I only had time for the vadai and will certainly be back for more- and visit the temple too.

The temple is of tremendous mythological importance to Hindus and a source of inspiration for others. The carvings around the periphery of the temple depict interesting episodes from Hindu mythology.

One the most ancient Hindu temple in SriLanka, millions of Hindu devotees every year flocking during the annual festival time to pay there tributes here. But unfortunately the priests here treating devotees how they pay for them. I personally known most of the priests here. That's why I am telling this. Other than, this temple festival is one of the most extravagant Hindu event outside Tamil dominated North. Specially the cart festival and the water cutting festival are most crowd pulling events. For the water cutting ceremony held at the banks of the Deduru Oya river, about 5 miles from the temple, main statue of the Lord Shiva carried by devotees through Chilaw town with music and dance performances. Many other religious people also visiting the temple during the festival time to purchase miscellaneous goods sells cheap prices at the temporary malls surrounding the temple area. Every year Munneswaram annual festival is the most business time in Chilaw area.
