If you are visting Canberra then the National Portrait Gallery should be on the list of places to visit. It provides an insight into the history of Australia through with many iconic pieces on display. The gallery is an easy walkaround with good facilities and an excellent cafe if you are in need of refreshment.

Definitely worth a visit. Some portraits are very life like. You will recognise a lot of well known Australians. The gallery is very modern.

I have been to the National Portrait Gallery a number of times since it opened. It's always a pleasure to wander through the permanent exhibition or special exhibitions. The venue is tranquil and serene set in front of the impressive High Court of Australia. The gift shop is extremely tempting and the cafe serves reasonable coffee. I would thoroughly recommend... This place is stunning....... such different ways to show "portraits", not just paintings. New mediums like film, older mediums like sculpture. Has a few of my all time favourites, like Bob Brown as a part of a whole scene of the saving the Franklin River from damming crusade.

I was disappointed with the NPG, i thought that they would have had more portraits that were relevant to us we are both 58. Too many of the portraits were from the 1700 and 1800 hundreds. This is one place... More

It's OK to visit the gallery but nothing so especial about it. They just have some collections which are not present from other galleries.

We have been able to visit the National Portrait Gallery since its opening, and in its early days regarded it as a chronicle of the rich and famous in Australian history: commissioned portraits and statues of the elite who wanted to ensure that they were remembered. Amazing photos and paintings of famous and not so famous people. Blown away by many of them. A very pleasant place to stroll around at your leisure. You can get right up close to the portraits.
